Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X100S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X100S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø50mm bore, 100mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X100S

The AirTAC SAILB50X100-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. Because the lock is spring-applied and air-released, cutting the release air drives a lock pin into the rod, securely holding the load at the retracted stroke end without relying on live pressure. This 50 mm bore generates 982N of push force at 0.5 MPa and includes a magnetic piston for position detection.

Unlike a plain SAI cylinder, this unit provides true power-loss safety, though the lock engages only at the stroke terminal rather than clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point. The variable air cushion at the locker end is notably shorter at 20 mm compared to the 30 mm cushion on the free end. For pneumatic control, avoid fast-exhaust valves, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X100S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Load Holding

Maintains the retracted position of vertical loads safely during power loss or pressure drops without needing continuous air supply.

conveyor_belt

Conveyor Lift Safety

Secures raised conveyor sections or gates in the retracted state, preventing accidental falls if pneumatic pressure is removed.

precision_manufacturing

Clamp and Hold

Holds workpieces firmly at the retracted stroke end during machining or processing, ensuring stability without live pressure.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X100S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Select this 50 mm bore when 982N of push force at 0.5 MPa is sufficient, or step down to a 40 mm bore providing 628N for lighter duties. Choose this SAILB configuration when you need the load held safely in the retracted rod-in position; select a SAILF variant instead if the extended rod-out end requires holding. If your application demands locking at an intermediate mid-stroke position rather than the stroke end, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice.

Remember that this is a static holding lock that engages after the cylinder stops, not a dynamic brake for a moving rod. Always use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve to prevent accidental lock release, and add an independent mechanical safety measure if human safety depends on the load staying up. Replacement requires matching the 50 mm bore, 100 mm stroke, back locker position, PT port threads, and the -S magnet for CMSE reed and DMSE electronic sensors.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X100S FAQ

At 0.5 MPa it provides 982N push and 825N pull force. At 0.7 MPa the push force is 1374N, and the maximum push force is 1767N at 0.9 MPa.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, holding the rod securely at the retracted stroke end when release air is cut. It unlocks automatically via air supply or manually via a lever, but it only engages after the piston stops, not as a mid-stroke clamp.
