Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X150S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X150S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø50mm bore, 150mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X150S

The AirTAC SAILB50X150-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. Because the lock is spring-applied and air-released, it automatically engages to hold the rod securely at the retracted stroke end whenever the release air is cut, providing fail-safe load holding without live pressure. Equipped with a magnet, it integrates seamlessly with AirTAC CMSE reed and DMSE electronic sensors for precise position detection.

Delivering 982N of push force and 825N of pull force at 0.5MPa, this bore size handles substantial vertical loads. The extruded aluminum barrel includes sensor grooves on both sides, and the variable air cushion at the locker end is specifically designed shorter at 20mm compared to the 30mm cushion on the free end. The standard carbon steel rod provides durable wear resistance for industrial cycling.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X150S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Safety

Secures elevated loads in the retracted position instantly upon air pressure loss, preventing sudden drops on vertical lifting fixtures.

shield

Machine Guard Hold

Locks a safety guard or gate firmly in the closed retracted stroke-end position without consuming continuous air supply.

precision_manufacturing

Clamp and Hold

Maintains clamping force on a workpiece at the end of the stroke during power interruptions, ensuring machining accuracy.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X150S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 50mm bore when a 40mm bore (628N push at 0.5MPa) lacks the lifting capacity, but a 63mm bore (1559N push at 0.5MPa) would be physical overkill. Select the SAILB configuration when the load must be secured in the retracted rod-in position; opt for SAILF if the extended rod-out position requires holding. If your application demands clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than a stroke-end static hold, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice instead.

For safe operation, never use a fast-exhaust valve with this lock cylinder, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock; always use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. Remember that the lock engages only after the cylinder has stopped, meaning it is a static holding device rather than a dynamic brake. If human safety depends on the load remaining retracted, add an independent safety measure as well. Replacement units must match the 50mm bore, 150mm stroke, PT tapered port threads, and the -S magnet option.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X150S FAQ

At 0.5MPa operating pressure, this 50mm bore cylinder provides 982N of push force and 825N of pull force. At 0.7MPa, the push force increases to 1374N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, located in the back cover to hold the rod only at the retracted stroke end. It engages statically after the piston stops. You can release it by supplying air to the release port or by using the manual release lever.
