Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X500S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X500S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø50mm bore, 500mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X500S

The AirTAC SAILB50X500-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. A spring-applied, air-released mechanism securely holds the piston rod at the retracted stroke end, maintaining vertical loads without requiring continuous live air pressure. Delivering 982N of push force and 825N of pull force at 0.5 MPa, this carbon-rod unit includes a -S magnet for position sensing.

The lock engages statically after the cylinder stops, rather than functioning as a mid-stroke clamp or dynamic brake. Notably, the variable air cushion at the locker end is 20 mm, intentionally shorter than the 30 mm cushion on the free end. For position feedback, the integrated magnet works seamlessly with AirTAC CMSE reed switches and DMSE solid-state electronic sensors.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X500S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Safety

Holds elevated loads securely at the retracted position during power loss, preventing sudden drops on vertical lifting fixtures.

conveyor_belt

Pallet Stopper

Locks a stopper blade in the retracted end state to allow pallet passage, maintaining the open position without continuous air consumption.

shield

Safety Gate Hold

Secures a machine guard in the closed retracted position, ensuring the barrier remains locked until release air is actively supplied.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X500S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 50 mm bore when 825N pull force at 0.5 MPa is sufficient, or step up to the 63 mm bore if your application requires 1402N of pull force. Select the SAILB configuration when the load must be secured in the retracted position; choose SAILF instead if the extended end requires holding. If your process demands clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than a stroke-end stop, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct alternative.

Because this model features a 500 mm stroke, incorporating external guide rods is highly recommended to prevent excessive side-loading and premature seal wear. The lock is a static holding device that engages only at the stroke terminal, so never use a fast-exhaust valve with this cylinder; always use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve to prevent back-pressure on the locker side from accidentally releasing the lock. For loads where human safety depends on the cylinder remaining retracted, add an independent mechanical safety measure.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X500S FAQ

At 0.5 MPa operating pressure, the 50 mm bore provides 982N of push force and 825N of pull force. At 0.7 MPa, the push force increases to 1374N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, located in the back cover to hold the rod statically at the retracted stroke end. It unlocks automatically via air supply or manually via a lever, but it cannot clamp at a mid-stroke position.
