Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X800S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X800S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø50mm bore, 800mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X800S

The AirTAC SAILB50X800-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. Because the lock is spring-applied and air-released, cutting the release air drives a lock pin into the 20mm rod, securely holding the load at the retracted stroke end without requiring live pressure. In this 50mm bore class, it generates 982N of push force and 825N of pull force at 0.5 MPa, making it well-suited for medium-duty holding tasks.

This -S variant includes a magnet for position sensing and works seamlessly with AirTAC CMSE reed and DMSE electronic switches. To accommodate the locking hardware, the variable air cushion at the locker end is notably shorter than the 30mm cushion found on the free end. The lock engages only after the piston has stopped at the stroke terminal; it is a static holding device, not a dynamic brake for a moving rod.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X800S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Holding

Secures elevated loads in the retracted position instantly upon air pressure loss, preventing sudden drops on vertical actuators.

conveyor_belt

Pallet Stopper

Locks a 50mm rod in the retracted end state to hold pallets firmly in place at conveyor transfer points without consuming continuous air.

shield

Safety Gate Restraint

Keeps heavy safety gates tightly closed and locked at the stroke end until the air release port is actively powered to open.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X800S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Select this 50mm bore model when an application requires a failsafe hold at the retracted position during a power or air loss event. If your system requires less force, stepping down is not an option as SAIL has no 32mm bore, but if higher force is needed, the 63mm bore provides 1559N at 0.5 MPa. For holding loads mid-stroke rather than at the end, choose the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder instead.

When integrating this 800mm stroke cylinder, guide rails are recommended to prevent excessive side-loading on the rod. To maintain lock integrity, never use a fast-exhaust valve; back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock, so an independent-exhaust solenoid valve is required. Always confirm the exact lock holding force from the datasheet, and if human safety depends on the load staying up, add an independent mechanical safety measure. Replacement matches require 50mm bore, 800mm stroke, back locker position, PT ports, and the -S magnet.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB50X800S FAQ

The 50mm bore generates 982N of push force and 825N of pull force at 0.5 MPa. At 0.7 MPa, the push force increases to 1374N, with a maximum rated push of 1767N at 0.9 MPa.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, holding the rod securely at the retracted stroke end without live pressure. It engages only after the cylinder stops and can be unlocked automatically via air or manually via a lever; it does not clamp at arbitrary mid-stroke positions.
