Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X160S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X160S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø80mm bore, 160mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X160S

The AirTAC SAILB80X160-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. It delivers 2513N of push force and 2268N of pull force at 0.5 MPa, utilizing a 25mm carbon steel rod. Because the lock is spring-applied and air-released, cutting the release air drives a pin into the rod, securely holding the load at the retracted stroke end without consuming live pressure. You can unlock it automatically by supplying air to the release port or by using the manual release lever.

This model includes a magnet for position sensing with AirTAC CMSE reed and DMSE electronic solid-state switches. The variable air cushion at the locker end measures 22.5mm, which is intentionally shorter than the 36mm cushion on the free end to accommodate the locking hardware. The 3/8 PT port threads ensure robust pneumatic connections for this power-failure-safe actuator.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X160S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Load Holding

Secures lifted loads at the retracted stroke end instantly upon air loss, preventing sudden drops in vertical lifting jigs and overhead assemblies.

shield

Power Failure Safety

Maintains a safely retracted position during emergency power or air supply cuts, protecting operators and machinery from unexpected movements.

precision_manufacturing

End-Stroke Clamping

Holds a workpiece or assembly firmly in the retracted terminal position without continuously consuming compressed air, saving energy during machining.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X160S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 80mm bore cylinder when an application requires holding a 2513N load at the retracted stroke end during a power loss. If your force requirements are lower, stepping down to a 63mm bore provides 1559N of push force at 0.5 MPa, while stepping up to a 100mm bore yields 3927N. Select the SAILB configuration specifically when the rod must be held in the retracted position; choose SAILF instead if the load must be held at the extended stroke end. For applications needing the rod clamped at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than only at the terminal end, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct alternative.

Remember that this lock is a static holding device that engages only after the piston has stopped at the stroke terminal; it is not a dynamic brake for a moving rod. Valve selection is critical: never use a fast-exhaust valve with this cylinder, as back-pressure on the locker side can inadvertently release the lock. Always use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. If human safety depends on the load remaining retracted, add an independent safety measure as well. Replacement matches require an 80mm bore, 160mm stroke, back locker position, 3/8 PT port, standard mountings (Basic, FA, FB, CA, CB, CR, LB, TC, FTC, TCM1, TCM2), and the -S magnet option.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X160S FAQ

At an operating pressure of 0.5 MPa, this 80mm bore cylinder provides 2513N of push force and 2268N of pull force. At 0.7 MPa, the push force increases to 3518N, and it reaches a maximum push force of 4523N at 0.9 MPa.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, holding the rod securely at the retracted stroke end when release air is cut off. It is a static hold that engages after the cylinder stops, not a mid-stroke clamp or dynamic brake. You can unlock it by supplying air to the release port or by using the manual release lever.
