Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X500S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X500S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø80mm bore, 500mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X500S

The AirTAC SAILB80X500-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. It secures the rod specifically at the retracted stroke-end position. The lock is spring-applied and air-released, meaning a mechanical spring drives a lock pin into the rod to maintain the load securely without requiring live air pressure. You restore movement by supplying release air to the port or by using the manual release lever.

Delivering 2513N push force and 2268N pull force at 0.5MPa, this bore 80 unit operates at 30-800mm/s. The variable air cushion at the locker end is shorter (22.5mm) than the free end (36mm) to accommodate the locking hardware. A standard carbon steel rod and an -S magnet for CMSE reed and DMSE electronic sensors are included.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X500S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Safety

Holds a raised load securely at the retracted stroke end during a power loss, preventing sudden drops on lifting platforms.

conveyor_belt

Pallet Stopper

Locks a stopper pin in the retracted position to hold pallets firmly in place on an assembly conveyor line.

shield

Safety Gate Hold

Maintains a machine guard in the closed retracted position without continuous air pressure, ensuring secure operator access control.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X500S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this SAILB configuration when your application must hold a load safely at the fully retracted position. If your process requires clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than the stroke terminal, select the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder instead. For lower force needs, a bore 63 unit provides 1559N push at 0.5MPa; stepping up to a bore 100 yields 3927N.

Because the 500mm stroke increases the risk of mechanical binding, use a linear guide to manage side loads. The lock is a static holding device that engages after the piston stops, not a dynamic brake. Never use a fast-exhaust valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock; use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. If human safety relies on the load staying up, add an independent safety measure. Replacement match: bore 80, stroke 500, back lock, PT port, -S magnet.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB80X500S FAQ

At 0.5MPa operating pressure, this double-acting bore 80 cylinder provides 2513N of push force and 2268N of pull force. It can deliver up to 4523N push force at 0.9MPa.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, holding the rod statically at the retracted stroke end without live pressure. It is not a dynamic brake and cannot hold at mid-stroke. Unlock it automatically via release air or manually via the lever, but avoid fast-exhaust valves to prevent accidental release.
