The AirTAC MTAL series is a single-acting, spring-return mini round cylinder with an aluminum barrel. Unlike double-acting actuators, its default state holds the rod extended. Supplying air retracts the rod against the return spring, and venting the port lets the spring push it back out. The series spans 4 bores: 20, 25, 32 and 40 mm.
The range uses short-stroke limits inherent to spring-return designs. Ports are G1/8 for the 20, 25 and 32 mm bores, and G1/4 for the 40 mm bore. Thread options include PT, G and NPT. The original MTAL uses threaded covers, distinguishing it mechanically from its replacement.
Net retract force is the air force minus the return-spring force, so always size from the specific model figure. The MTAL is discontinued. The drop-in replacement is the MTBL: it shares the same bore, stroke, spring-return behavior, port and mounting, but upgrades to a riveted body and current CMSG/DMSG/EMSG sensors.
