About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X400

The AirTAC BSAID100X400 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod configuration and an integrated clamp-lock mechanism. A spring-applied, air-released gripper clamps the piston rod to secure the load at any position along the 400 mm travel, providing a static holding force of 5500 N. Because it is a double-rod design, the cylinder delivers equal thrust in both directions, offering 3681 N of push and pull force at 0.5 MPa. You must size the holding force against your static load independently of the thrust, as the clamp retention and pneumatic thrust are two separate quantities.

This cylinder uses a 25 mm rod and M20x1.5 thread on both ends, allowing you to mount a workpiece on one side and a guide or position flag on the opposite end for dual-side anti-rotation. The enclasp mechanism requires a separate G1/8 unlock port and balanced air pressure of 0.15-0.7 MPa to release safely. Note that the variable air cushion only decelerates the piston near the stroke ends; the clamp is the sole device responsible for holding the load.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

5500 N
static holding force (Ø100 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø100mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa3927 N3682 N
0.7 MPa (max)5498 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (5500 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X400 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Axis Holding

Secures a 400 mm vertical lift at any intermediate height using 5500 N of holding force, preventing gravity-induced drops during operation.

shield

Power Loss Safety

The spring-applied clamp engages automatically upon air loss, freezing the double-rod payload exactly where it stopped without needing live pressure.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Locks the workpiece rigidly at a specific machining coordinate along the stroke, using the opposite rod end for a position flag.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X400 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this double-rod clamp-lock cylinder when an application requires holding a load securely at any intermediate position while providing equal force both ways. If you only need to secure a load at the fully extended or retracted stroke end, a SAIL cylinder suffices; if no locking is needed at all, a plain SAID is adequate. Stepping down to an 80 mm bore reduces the holding force to 3600 N and thrust to 2268 N, whereas moving up to 125 mm increases the hold to 8600 N. For this 400 mm stroke, the 25 mm rod carries high side loads, but an external guide is still recommended to prevent binding.

The clamp locks only after the rod has stopped; it cannot brake a moving load. Unlocking must occur with balanced pressures on both piston sides, or the rod may jump abruptly. For safety-critical applications, an independent external safety measure is required. This configuration features PT tapered ports, a 1/2 inch cylinder port, and accepts Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, or TCM2 mounts (omitting FB, CA, CB, CR). It lacks a magnet, so CMSE or DMSE sensors cannot be used without modification.

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X400 FAQ

The integrated clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 5500 N. It engages via spring pressure to hold the rod at any position along the 400 mm stroke, completely separate from the 3681 N pneumatic thrust.

The clamp locks only after the cylinder has stopped moving and cannot act as a brake. To release it safely, you must apply 0.15-0.7 MPa to the G1/8 enclasp port only after the air pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, otherwise the rod may jump abruptly.
