About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X450

The AirTAC BSAID100X450 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod design and an integrated spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It provides a static holding force of 5500 N and locks the load at any position along its 450 mm stroke. Because it is a double-rod unit, it delivers equal thrust in both directions (3681 N at 0.5 MPa), and having a rod extending from each end allows you to mount a workpiece on one side and a guide or position flag on the other for dual-side anti-rotation.

It is vital to distinguish holding force from thrust: the 5500 N clamp grip is a separate static metric from the 3681 N pneumatic thrust, meaning you must size the clamp against your static load, not the cylinder's push force. The clamp engages only after the piston has stopped, meaning it cannot brake a moving rod. Furthermore, the lock releases only when air pressures on both sides are balanced via the G1/8 enclasp port; otherwise, the rod may jump abruptly upon release.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

5500 N
static holding force (Ø100 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø100mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa3927 N3682 N
0.7 MPa (max)5498 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (5500 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X450 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Lift Holding

Secures heavy vertical loads at any point in the 450 mm travel, preventing sudden drops when air pressure is removed.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Holds a dual-sided workpiece rigidly for machining or inspection, using the second rod for a counterweight or guide.

shield

Power Failure Safety

The spring-applied clamp engages automatically upon loss of air pressure, freezing the load safely mid-stroke.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X450 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 100 mm bore model when an application demands high bidirectional force and mid-stroke holding, such as heavy vertical lifting. If your load is lighter, stepping down to an 80 mm bore offers 2268 N of pull thrust and a 3600 N holding force. Conversely, a 125 mm bore provides 5734 N pull thrust and 8600 N holding force for heavier rigs. This BSAID100X450 outperforms a SAIL cylinder because it locks anywhere, whereas SAIL only holds at stroke ends; a plain SAID suffices if no intermediate holding is required.

As a replacement, match the double-rod configuration, 100 mm bore, 450 mm stroke, and PT-threaded ports (1/2 inch cylinder ports plus the G1/8 enclasp port). The BSAID mounting set omits FB, CA, CB, and CR brackets, accepting only Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2. Because the 450 mm stroke exceeds 300 mm, an external guide is recommended to prevent rod side-loading, even with the sturdy 25 mm rod and M20x1.5 thread. No magnet is specified, so CMSE/DMSE sensors will not function without modification.

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X450 FAQ

The integrated clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 5500 N. It engages only after the cylinder has stopped moving and holds the load at any position along the stroke.

The lock is released by supplying air to the G1/8 enclasp port only after the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced. If pressures are unbalanced, the rod can jump abruptly upon release.
