About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X450S

The AirTAC BSAID100X450-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod design and an integrated spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It provides a static holding force of 5500 N, gripping the rod securely at any position along its 450 mm travel. Because it is a double-rod unit, the thrust is equal in both directions at 3681 N (0.5 MPa). Remember that holding force and thrust are separate values; you must size the clamp's 5500 N against your static load, not the cylinder's push/pull thrust.

This double-rod layout lets you mount a workpiece on one end and a guide, counterweight, or position flag on the opposite end for dual-side guidance and anti-rotation. The clamp operates via a third G1/8 enclasp port and requires balanced pressure to unlock safely, preventing abrupt rod jumps. The variable air cushion only decelerates the piston near stroke ends; the mechanical clamp is what actually holds the load. Fitted with a carbon steel rod and PT ports, this -S variant includes a magnet for CMSE reed and DMSE electronic sensors.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

5500 N
static holding force (Ø100 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø100mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa3927 N3682 N
0.7 MPa (max)5498 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (5500 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X450S Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Z-Axis Hold

Secures a heavy vertical load at any mid-stroke height during power loss, relying on the 5500 N clamp rather than live air pressure.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Locks the double-rod at a precise machining coordinate, using the second rod end for an external anti-rotation guide.

shield

Emergency Safety Stop

Holds a suspended workpiece safely in place anywhere along the 450 mm travel when the air supply drops.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X450S the Right Clamp-Lock?

Step down to a bore 80 model if your application requires less holding power, as the 80 mm bore offers 2268 N of thrust and a 3600 N clamp force. Choose this BSAID100X450-S over a SAIL model when you need to secure a load somewhere other than the stroke end, as the clamp locks anywhere. If bidirectional equal force is unnecessary, a plain single-rod SAI cylinder suffices. Keep in mind the clamp only engages after the rod stops; it cannot brake a moving load, and safety-critical applications need an independent backup measure.

This 450 mm stroke falls within the 1000 mm standard limit but exceeds 300 mm, so an external guide is recommended to manage side loads. The 25 mm carbon steel rod with an M20x1.5 thread handles high side loads well. Replacement requires a double-rod, 100 mm bore, 450 mm stroke, PT ported cylinder. BSAID mounting omits FB, CA, CB, and CR; use Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, or TCM2. The -S magnet works with CMSE and DMSE switches.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID100X450S FAQ

The 5500 N static holding force is the mechanical clamp's capacity to hold the rod at any position, which is separate from the 3681 N pneumatic thrust the cylinder generates. You must size the holding force against your static load.

No, the clamp locks only after the cylinder has stopped; it cannot brake a moving rod. It must be unlocked with balanced air pressures on both sides of the piston to prevent abrupt movement, and safety-critical loads need an independent measure.
