About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X225

The AirTAC BSAID125X225 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod configuration and an integrated clamp-lock mechanism. A spring-applied, air-released gripper clamps the piston rod to secure the load at any position along the 225 mm stroke, delivering a static holding force of 8600 N. Because it is a double-rod design, the thrust is equal in both directions at 5734 N (0.5 MPa), and the second rod allows you to mount a counterweight, position flag, or secondary tool on the opposite end for dual-side guidance.

It is crucial to distinguish this 8600 N static holding force from the cylinder's 5734 N thrust; you must size the clamp capacity against the static load weight, not the pneumatic push force. The clamp operates via a separate G1/8 enclasp port, requiring 0.15-0.7 MPa to release. Note that the variable air cushions only decelerate the piston near stroke ends, while the mechanical clamp provides the actual holding power. The clamp locks only after the rod has stopped, so it cannot brake a moving load.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

8600 N
static holding force (Ø125 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø125mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa6136 N5734 N
0.7 MPa (max)8590 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (8600 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X225 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Load Holding

Secures heavy lifted masses at any intermediate height on vertical axes, preventing gravity-induced drops during operation or power loss.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Freezes the workpiece at a precise mid-stroke location for machining or inspection, using the 8600 N clamp to resist cutting forces.

shield

Fail-Safe Emergency Stop

Holds the double-rod payload safely in place anywhere along its travel when air pressure is removed, providing a reliable mechanical lock.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X225 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 125 mm bore when an application demands extreme holding capacity, stepping up from a 100 mm bore that provides 5500 N of holding force and 3681 N of thrust. If you only need to hold a load at the stroke end, a plain SAIL lock cylinder suffices, but the BSAID is required for bidirectional, mid-stroke clamping. If no locking is needed at all, a standard SAID cylinder is adequate. For replacements, match the double-rod format, 225 mm stroke, PT tapered ports (1/2 inch cylinder ports), and the correct mounting set (Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, TCM2). This model does not include a magnet (-S) for CMSE or DMSE sensors.

Always manage the release carefully: the clamp must be unlocked only when the air pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, otherwise the rod may jump abruptly. For safety-critical loads, an independent external safety measure is required. The 32 mm rod diameter and M27x2 thread provide excellent rigidity, but even with this robust rod, any stroke approaching 300 mm or beyond should use an external guide to prevent excessive side-loading.

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X225 FAQ

The 8600 N static holding force is a mechanical clamping value separate from the 5734 N pneumatic thrust. The clamp holds the load at any position without live air pressure, whereas thrust is the pneumatic pushing force.

No, the clamp locks only after the cylinder has stopped; it cannot brake a moving rod. It must be unlocked with balanced pressures on both sides to prevent the rod from jumping, and safety-critical loads need an independent safety measure.
