About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X400

The AirTAC BSAID125X400 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod layout and an integrated spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It provides a static holding force of 8600 N, gripping the rod securely at any position along its 400 mm travel. Because it is a double-rod design, the thrust is equal in both directions at 5734 N (at 0.5 MPa), and the second rod allows you to mount a workpiece on one end and a guide or counterweight on the other for dual-side anti-rotation.

It is crucial to distinguish this 8600 N holding force from the cylinder's 5734 N thrust: the clamp only holds a static load and cannot brake a moving rod. The lock engages strictly after the cylinder has stopped, and it releases only when air pressure is balanced across both piston sides via the G1/8 enclasp port. Note that the variable air cushion at the stroke ends merely decelerates the piston; the clamp itself is the device that holds the load.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

8600 N
static holding force (Ø125 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø125mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa6136 N5734 N
0.7 MPa (max)8590 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (8600 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X400 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Load Holding

Secures heavy vertical platens at any intermediate height with 8600 N of holding force, preventing gravity-driven drops during air pressure loss.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Hold

Locks a dual-sided workpiece carriage rigidly in place for high-precision machining operations, utilizing the second rod for an anti-rotation guide.

shield

Emergency Power-Loss Stop

Spring-applied clamp halts and holds the load exactly where it stopped when power fails, requiring balanced pressure to release safely.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X400 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 125 mm bore when an application demands high load retention mid-stroke, stepping up from the 100 mm bore which offers 5500 N holding force and 3681 N pull thrust. A plain SAI or SAID cylinder suffices if you only need end-of-stroke positioning, while the SAIL series locks solely at the stroke ends; the BSAID125X400 is selected when you must hold securely anywhere along the travel. Remember that the clamp locks only after the rod stops and requires balanced pressure to unlock safely, so human-safety-critical applications need an independent external measure.

As a replacement, verify the double-rod configuration, 125 mm bore, 400 mm stroke, PT tapered port threads (1/2 inch cylinder ports plus a G1/8 enclasp port), and the correct mounting set. Because it is a double-rod cylinder, the available mounts are Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2, omitting the FB, CA, CB, and CR foot and clevis brackets. The robust 32 mm carbon steel rod and M27x2 thread handle high side loads well, but at 400 mm stroke you should still use an external guide to prevent binding. No magnet is specified, so CMSE and DMSE sensors cannot be used without modification.

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X400 FAQ

The clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 8600 N. It is bidirectional and locks at any position along the 400 mm stroke, but only after the cylinder rod has come to a complete stop.

The clamp is released via the G1/8 enclasp port, but only when air pressure is balanced on both sides of the piston. If pressures are not balanced, the rod can jump abruptly upon release.
