About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X50S

The AirTAC BSAID125X50-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod configuration and a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It secures the load at any position along its 50 mm travel, delivering a static holding force of 8600 N. Because it is a double-rod actuator, the thrust is equal in both directions at 5734 N (0.5 MPa), and the second protruding rod is ideal for mounting a counterweight, external guide, or position flag.

It is vital to distinguish this 8600 N static holding force from the cylinder thrust; the clamp sustains the stationary load, while thrust moves it. The lock engages only after the piston stops, as the variable air cushion merely decelerates the rod near stroke end without holding it. Unlocking requires balanced air pressure via the G1/8 enclasp port to prevent abrupt rod movement.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

8600 N
static holding force (Ø125 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø125mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa6136 N5734 N
0.7 MPa (max)8590 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (8600 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Hold

Secures a heavy workpiece at an exact intermediate point for machining operations, using the second rod end for a position flag.

vertical_align_center

Vertical Lift Anti-Drop

Maintains a suspended 125 mm bore load mid-stroke during a power loss, holding firm with 8600 N of clamping force.

Dual-Tool Assembly Station

Drives opposing tools with equal force in both directions, locking the assembly anywhere in the 50 mm travel for inspection.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X50S the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this double-rod model when a application demands equal bidirectional force and dual-side work mounting, stepping down to a 100 mm bore (3681 N pull at 0.5 MPa, 5500 N hold) if the load is lighter. Select it over a SAIL cylinder when you must lock at any intermediate position rather than just at stroke end. For non-safety-critical holds, a plain SAID without a clamp suffices.

The clamp locks only after the rod stops and cannot brake a moving load; human-safety applications require an independent secondary measure. To replace this unit, match the 125 mm bore, 50 mm stroke, PT port threads, and the double-rod mounting set (Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, TCM2). The -S magnet enables CMSE (reed) and DMSE (solid-state) sensors, and the M27x2 rod thread handles high side loads.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load
  • ✓ Balanced-pressure unlock circuit
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X50S FAQ

It uses a spring-applied, air-released mechanism to grip the rod at any stroke position with an 8600 N static holding force. It is bidirectional and holds equally whether the rod was extending or retracting.

The clamp locks only after the cylinder has stopped and cannot brake a moving rod. You must balance the air pressure on both sides of the piston via the G1/8 port before unlocking, or the rod may jump abruptly.
