About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X700

The AirTAC BSAID125X700 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod layout and a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It secures the load at any position along its 700 mm stroke, delivering a static holding force of 8600 N. Because it is a double-rod unit, the thrust is equal in both directions at 5734 N (0.5 MPa), making it ideal for dual-side guidance. A critical distinction exists between holding force and thrust: the 8600 N clamp grip is a separate static metric from the cylinder's thrust, so you must size the clamp force against the static load, not the pneumatic push.

This enclasp mechanism locks bidirectionally after the rod stops, but it cannot brake a moving piston. It requires a third G1/8 unlock port alongside the 1/2 cylinder ports, and pressures must be balanced before releasing to prevent abrupt rod jumps. The variable air cushion only decelerates the piston near stroke ends; the clamp is the actual holding device. For sensing, adding a magnet allows the use of AirTAC CMSE reed or DMSE electronic switches.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

8600 N
static holding force (Ø125 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø125mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa6136 N5734 N
0.7 MPa (max)8590 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (8600 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X700 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Load Holding

Locks a heavy vertical payload at any point in the 700 mm travel with 8600 N of holding force, preventing descent during air loss.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Secures a dual-side workpiece platform rigidly in place for milling or inspection, using the double-rod layout for anti-rotation.

shield

Power Failure Safety

The spring-applied clamp engages automatically on loss of air pressure, freezing the rod safely wherever it stopped.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X700 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 125 mm bore if you need higher force than the 80 mm option (2268 N pull, 3600 N hold) but can step down to the 100 mm bore (3681 N pull, 5500 N hold) for lighter loads. Select the BSAID double-rod configuration when a project requires mounting a workpiece on one end and a counterweight or position flag on the other, providing anti-rotation and dual-side guidance. A plain SAID suffices if mid-stroke locking is unnecessary, while a SAIL unit only holds at stroke ends.

At 700 mm, the M27 rod thread handles significant side loads, yet an external guide is still recommended for unsupported lengths. The clamp locks only after the cylinder stops and must be unlocked with balanced pressures to avoid sudden movement; safety-critical applications require an independent backup measure. This carbon steel rod unit uses PT tapered threads and accepts Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, or TCM2 mounts (omitting FB/CA/CB/CR).

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X700 FAQ

It provides a static holding force of 8600 N. The clamp locks bidirectionally at any position along the stroke, but only after the rod has stopped moving.

The clamp uses a third G1/8 enclasp port. You must balance the air pressures on both sides of the piston before unlocking, otherwise the rod can jump abruptly. It is not a moving-rod brake.
