About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X900

The AirTAC BSAID125X900 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod configuration and an integrated clamp-lock mechanism. A spring-applied, air-released gripper clamps the piston rod to secure the load at any position along the 900 mm travel, delivering a static holding force of 8600 N. Because it is a double-rod design, the thrust is equal in both directions at 5734 N (0.5 MPa), and the second rod allows you to mount a workpiece on one end and a guide or position flag on the other.

It is crucial to distinguish this 8600 N static holding force from the cylinder thrust; you must size the clamp capacity against the static load weight, not the push or pull force. The clamp operates via a separate G1/8 enclasp port and requires balanced air pressure to unlock safely. Furthermore, the variable air cushions only decelerate the piston near the stroke ends to prevent impact damage, while the mechanical clamp is the sole device responsible for holding the load.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

8600 N
static holding force (Ø125 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø125mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa6136 N5734 N
0.7 MPa (max)8590 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (8600 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X900 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Axis Load Holding

Secures heavy vertical lifting platforms at any intermediate height, preventing gravity-driven drops with 8600 N of static holding force.

shield

Emergency Power-Loss Hold

Spring-applied clamp engages instantly upon air loss, freezing the 900 mm stroke position to protect operators and tooling.

Machining Position Lock

Uses the dual-rod design to mount a machining head on one side and a counterweight on the other, locking the assembly rigidly for processing.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X900 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 125 mm bore when an application demands high load holding mid-stroke, stepping up from a 100 mm bore that provides 3681 N thrust and 5500 N holding force. If securing the load only at the fully extended or retracted position is sufficient, a plain SAI or SAIL cylinder suffices, but the BSAI/BSAID series is required for true lock-anywhere functionality. Remember that the clamp locks only after the rod has stopped, it cannot brake a moving load, and safety-critical applications require an independent external safety measure.

To replace this unit, match the double-rod configuration, 125 mm bore, 900 mm stroke, PT port threads, and the 1/2 inch cylinder ports. The BSAID mounting set omits FB, CA, CB, and CR brackets, accepting only Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 styles. Because the stroke is 900 mm, the large 32 mm rod and M27x2 thread provide excellent side-load resistance, but an external guide is still recommended for unsupported lengths. Sensors are not included, but the -S magnet option supports AirTAC CMSE reed and DMSE electronic switches.

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID125X900 FAQ

The integrated clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 8600 N. It engages a spring-applied gripper on the rod to hold the load at any position along the 900 mm stroke, operating independently of the 5734 N cylinder thrust.

The clamp locks only after the cylinder has stopped and cannot brake a moving rod. To release it safely, air pressure must be balanced on both sides of the piston via the G1/8 enclasp port; otherwise, the rod may jump abruptly. Safety-critical loads require an additional independent safety measure.
