About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X150

The AirTAC BSAID40X150 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod configuration and a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It provides a static holding force of 900 N, gripping the rod securely at any position along its 150 mm travel. Because it is a double-rod actuator, it delivers equal thrust in both directions (528 N push and 528 N pull at 0.5 MPa). A critical distinction is that this 900 N holding force is entirely separate from the cylinder's thrust; you must size the clamp against the static load, not the pneumatic force.

The clamp mechanism uses a third G1/8 enclasp port to release the rod, operating within a 0.15-0.7 MPa pressure range. Remember that the variable air cushions at the stroke ends only decelerate the piston; the mechanical clamp is what actually holds the load. Furthermore, the clamp locks only after the rod has stopped, meaning it cannot brake a moving load, and it must be unlocked with balanced air pressures to prevent the rod from jumping abruptly.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

900 N
static holding force (Ø40 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø40mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa628 N528 N
0.7 MPa (max)880 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (900 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X150 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Mid-Stroke Vertical Hold

Locks a lifted load at any intermediate height along the vertical axis with 900 N of holding force, preventing drops during processing.

shield

Power Loss Safety

The spring-applied clamp engages automatically anywhere in the 150 mm travel if air pressure is lost, securing the dual-side tooling instantly.

Machining Positioning

Holds the carbon steel rod rigidly in place during drilling or inspection, using the second rod end for a counterweight or guide.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X150 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this double-rod clamp-lock cylinder when an application requires holding a workpiece at an arbitrary mid-stroke position, unlike a SAIL model which only locks at the stroke end. If your application does not require mid-stroke holding, a plain SAID cylinder suffices. If you need higher holding capacity, stepping up to a 50 mm bore increases the static hold to 1400 N and the bidirectional thrust to 825 N at 0.5 MPa. Conversely, a 32 mm bore reduces the hold to 600 N and thrust to 345 N.

When replacing this unit, match the double-rod configuration, 40 mm bore, 150 mm stroke, and PT port threads. The BSAID mounting set includes Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 (omitting FB, CA, CB, and CR). The standard carbon steel rods feature M12x1.25 threads, providing a robust interface for mounting. As this is a non-magnet model, position sensing via CMSE or DMSE switches is not supported without modification. Always ensure the cylinder has stopped and pressures are balanced before unlocking to avoid sudden rod movement.

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X150 FAQ

The BSAID40X150 features a static holding force of 900 N. This bidirectional clamp locks the rod at any position along the 150 mm stroke, and this holding capacity is separate from the 528 N thrust generated by the cylinder itself.

The clamp locks only after the cylinder has stopped; it cannot brake a moving rod. It must be unlocked by applying air to the G1/8 enclasp port only after the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, otherwise the rod may move abruptly. Safety-critical applications require an independent external safety measure.
