About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X175

The AirTAC BSAID40X175 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod design and an integrated clamp-lock mechanism. A spring-applied, air-released gripper clamps the 16mm carbon steel rod to hold the load at any position along the 175mm stroke, delivering a static holding force of 900 N. Because it is a double-rod variant, the thrust is equal in both directions at 528 N, and having a rod out both ends allows you to mount a workpiece on one side and a guide or position flag on the other.

It is vital to distinguish this 900 N static holding force from the 528 N cylinder thrust; the clamp sustains stationary loads, while thrust dictates movement. The lock operates via a third G1/8 enclasp port, separate from the 1/4 cylinder ports. Remember that the variable air cushion only decelerates the piston near stroke end—it does not hold the load. The clamp locks only after the rod has stopped and requires balanced air pressure to unlock safely.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

900 N
static holding force (Ø40 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø40mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa628 N528 N
0.7 MPa (max)880 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (900 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X175 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Load Holding

Locks a lifted workpiece at any point along the vertical travel to prevent gravity-driven drops during an air loss event.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Hold

Secures a dual-sided fixture rigidly in place for intermediate machining or inspection steps without maintaining live air pressure.

build

Dual-Side Assembly Tooling

Uses the second rod end to mount a counterweight or guide while the primary end executes the clamping cycle.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X175 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this double-rod model when you need symmetrical force (528 N both ways) and dual-end mounting for anti-rotation or external guidance. If your application only requires locking at the stroke end, a plain SAIL cylinder suffices, but the BSAID40X175 is necessary for holding at any intermediate position. If you need higher load capacity, stepping up to a 50mm bore provides 825 N of thrust and 1400 N of holding force. Conversely, a 32mm bore offers 345 N of thrust and 600 N of holding force for lighter loads.

For safe operation, never treat the clamp as a dynamic brake; it only engages after the cylinder stops. Always balance the air pressure before unlocking, or the rod may jump abruptly. Safety-critical applications require an independent external measure. This PT-ported cylinder accepts Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 mounts (omitting FB/CA/CB/CR). As specified, it has no magnet; add an -S suffix if CMSE reed or DMSE electronic sensors are needed.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load
  • ✓ Balanced-pressure unlock circuit
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X175 FAQ

It uses a spring-applied, air-released mechanism to grip the rod at any stroke position, providing a 900 N static holding force. It is bidirectional and holds equally whether the rod was extending or retracting.

No. The clamp only engages after the rod has stopped; it cannot brake a moving load. Additionally, you must balance the air pressure on both sides of the piston before unlocking, or the rod may move abruptly upon release.
