About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X80

The AirTAC BSAID40X80 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod design and a built-in clamp-lock mechanism. A spring-applied, air-released gripper clamps the piston rod to hold the load at any position along the 80mm stroke, delivering a static holding force of 900 N. Because it is a double-rod actuator, the thrust is equal in both directions at 528 N, and the rod extends from both end caps. Remember that this holding force is a distinct quantity from the cylinder's thrust; you must size the clamp's 900 N capacity against your static load, not the 528 N drive force.

The clamping action is bidirectional, securing the rod whether it was extending or retracting, but it only engages after the rod has stopped moving—it cannot brake a moving load. To release the lock, air must be supplied to the dedicated G1/8 enclasp port, which requires balanced pressure on both sides of the piston to prevent the rod from jumping abruptly. The double-rod layout is specifically chosen to mount a workpiece on one end and a guide, counterweight, or position flag on the other, providing dual-side anti-rotation guidance.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

900 N
static holding force (Ø40 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø40mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa628 N528 N
0.7 MPa (max)880 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (900 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X80 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Axis Hold

Locks a 40mm double-rod payload at any vertical height with 900 N of holding force, preventing gravity drops when air pressure is removed.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Hold

Secures the dual-rod workpiece rigidly at a mid-stroke machining point, using the second rod for anti-rotation guidance during the operation.

shield

Power Loss Safety

The spring-applied clamp engages automatically anywhere in the 80mm travel during a power or air loss, holding the load until pressure is restored.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X80 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose the BSAID40X80 when you need precise mid-stroke holding and dual-side guidance. If 528 N of thrust or 900 N of holding force is insufficient, step up to the BSAID50X80, which offers 825 N of thrust and 1400 N of holding force. Conversely, if the load is lighter, the BSAID32X80 provides 345 N of thrust and 600 N of holding force. This model outperforms a SAIL cylinder because it locks at any position, whereas SAIL only holds at stroke ends; if mid-stroke locking isn't needed, a plain SAID double-rod cylinder suffices.

When replacing this actuator, match the 40mm bore, 80mm stroke, double-rod layout, and PT port threads. The double-rod design omits the FB, CA, CB, and CR foot and clevis mounts, accepting only Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 brackets. Note that this unit lacks a magnet, so CMSE reed and DMSE electronic sensors cannot be used without a -S variant. The 16mm carbon steel rod and M12x1.25 thread handle side loads well, but for any stroke over 300 mm, an external guide is mandatory. Always ensure the rod has stopped before applying the clamp, and add an independent safety measure for human-safety-critical holds, as the lock releases only under balanced pressure.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load
  • ✓ Balanced-pressure unlock circuit

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X80 FAQ

It uses a spring-applied, air-released mechanism to grip the 16mm rod, providing a static holding force of 900 N at any position along the stroke. It locks only after the cylinder has stopped and cannot brake a moving load.

Air must be supplied to the G1/8 enclasp port, but the pressures on both sides of the piston must be balanced first. If unbalanced, the rod can jump abruptly upon release, so ensure the cylinder has stopped before unlocking.
