About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X80S

The AirTAC BSAID40X80-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a rod extending from both ends and an integrated spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It delivers a bidirectional static holding force of 900 N at any position along its 80 mm travel. Because it is a double-rod design, the thrust is equal in both directions at 528 N (0.5 MPa), and the second rod allows you to mount a guide, counterweight, or position flag on the opposite end for dual-side guidance. Keep in mind that holding force and thrust are distinct metrics; you must size the 900 N clamp capacity against your static load, not the cylinder's push/pull thrust.

The enclasp mechanism requires a third G1/8 pneumatic port (separate from the 1/4 cylinder ports) to release the grip, operating within a 0.15-0.7 MPa range. The clamp locks only after the piston has stopped, meaning it cannot brake a moving rod. Furthermore, you must balance the air pressure on both sides of the piston before unlocking, or the rod may jump abruptly. The variable air cushion at the stroke ends only decelerates the piston; it does not hold the load.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

900 N
static holding force (Ø40 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø40mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa628 N528 N
0.7 MPa (max)880 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (900 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X80S Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Lift Holding

Maintains a 900 N vertical load at any intermediate height without relying on continuous air pressure, preventing sudden drops during power loss.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Secures a dual-sided workpiece fixture rigidly in place for intermediate machining or inspection steps, using the second rod for an external guide.

shield

Emergency Safety Stop

Provides a bidirectional hold to freeze a stopped load mid-stroke during an unexpected air supply failure, though an external brake is required for human safety.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X80S the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this double-rod clamp-lock model when a process requires workpiece mounting on one rod end and an anti-rotation guide or position flag on the other. If you do not need dual-side guidance, a single-rod BSAI40X80-S provides the same 900 N hold with a simpler footprint. This BSAID variant outperforms a SAIL40 stroke-end lock because it grips anywhere along the travel, whereas SAIL only holds at the extremes. If your load only moves to the ends and stays there under pressure, a plain SAID40 cylinder is sufficient.

For replacement, verify the 40 mm bore, 80 mm stroke, double-rod configuration, and PT port threads. The -S suffix indicates a magnet for CMSE reed and DMSE solid-state sensors. Mounting options for the double-rod body omit the FB, CA, CB, and CR brackets, accepting only Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2. The 16 mm carbon steel rod with an M12x1.25 thread handles moderate side loads well. Always ensure the cylinder has stopped before engaging the clamp, and add an independent safety measure if human safety depends on the hold.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load
  • ✓ Balanced-pressure unlock circuit
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID40X80S FAQ

The integrated clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 900 N. It locks the rod at any position bidirectionally, but only after the cylinder has come to a complete stop.

You must balance the air pressure on both sides of the piston before applying air to the G1/8 enclasp port. If pressures are not balanced, the rod can jump abruptly upon release. The clamp is not a dynamic brake.
