About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X100

The AirTAC BSAID50X100 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod layout and a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It provides a static holding force of 1400 N and locks the carbon steel rod at any position along its 100 mm stroke. Because it is a double-rod enclasp unit, it delivers equal thrust in both directions, generating 825 N of pull force at 0.5 MPa on either end. Remember that holding force and thrust are distinct metrics: you must size the 1400 N clamp capacity against your static load, not the cylinder's 825 N thrust.

A core advantage of this bidirectional clamp is that it secures the load whether the rod was extending or retracting, but it only engages after the piston has stopped. It cannot brake a moving rod. The mechanism requires a third G1/8 enclasp port to release the lock, and pressures on both sides of the piston must be balanced during unlocking to prevent the rod from jumping abruptly. The variable air cushion at the stroke ends only decelerates the piston; it does not hold the load.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

1400 N
static holding force (Ø50 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø50mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa982 N825 N
0.7 MPa (max)1374 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (1400 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X100 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Axis Hold

Maintains a 1400 N static hold on a vertical lift at any intermediate position, preventing gravity-driven drops during a pneumatic pressure loss.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Freezes the double-rod at a specific 100 mm travel point for precise machining or inspection, utilizing the second rod end for a counter-tool.

shield

Mid-Stroke Safety Stop

Secures the load exactly where it stops mid-cycle if power is lost, requiring balanced pressures to release the clamp safely.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X100 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this double-rod BSAID50X100 when you need equal push and pull forces (825 N at 0.5 MPa) alongside mid-stroke holding, or step down to a 40 mm bore (528 N pull, 900 N hold) for lighter loads. If you only need to hold at the stroke end, a plain SAIL cylinder suffices, but the BSAI/BSAID enclasp locks anywhere. The double-rod design lets you mount a workpiece on one end and a guide or position flag on the other for dual-side anti-rotation. For safety-critical holds, add an independent safety measure, as the clamp locks only after stopping and requires balanced pressure to unlock. This PT-ported cylinder uses Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 mounts (omitting FB/CA/CB/CR).

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load
  • ✓ Balanced-pressure unlock circuit
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X100 FAQ

The built-in enclasp mechanism provides a static holding force of 1400 N. It is bidirectional and locks the carbon steel rod at any position along the 100 mm stroke, but only after the cylinder has come to a complete stop.

The lock is air-released via a third G1/8 enclasp port. To prevent the rod from jumping abruptly, the air pressures on both sides of the piston must be balanced before unlocking. The clamp cannot be used to brake a moving load.
