About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X150

The AirTAC BSAID50X150 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod layout and an integrated spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It provides a static holding force of 1400 N at any position along its 150 mm travel. Because it is a double-rod unit, the thrust is equal in both directions at 825 N (0.5 MPa), and the second protruding rod is ideal for mounting a counterweight, a position flag, or dual-side guidance to prevent rotation.

A critical distinction exists between holding force and thrust: the 1400 N clamp force is a separate static braking value from the 825 N pneumatic thrust, meaning you must size the hold against the static load, not the cylinder's push power. Furthermore, the variable air cushion only decelerates the piston near the stroke ends; the clamp mechanism alone holds the load. Unlocking requires a third G1/8 enclasp port and balanced air pressure on both sides of the piston to prevent the rod from jumping abruptly upon release.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

1400 N
static holding force (Ø50 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø50mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa982 N825 N
0.7 MPa (max)1374 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (1400 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X150 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Mid-Stroke Hold

Suspends and locks a 50 mm double-rod payload at any point in a vertical lift, using the 1400 N clamp to prevent gravity-driven drops during cycle pauses.

shield

Power Failure Safety

Engages the spring-applied clamp instantly upon air loss, holding the dual-rod load safely wherever it stopped rather than crashing down.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Freeze

Secures a workpiece or fixture rigidly at a specific intermediate distance for probing or light machining, using the second rod for a position flag.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X150 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Step down to a 40 mm bore (528 N pull thrust, 900 N hold) if your static load is lighter, or step up to a 63 mm bore (1402 N pull thrust, 2200 N hold) for heavier suspended masses. Choose this BSAID clamp-lock over a stroke-end-only SAIL model when you need to freeze the load mid-travel. A plain SAID is sufficient if no intermediate holding is required. This clamp locks only after the rod has stopped, so it cannot brake a moving load, and human-safety applications need an independent backup measure.

This 50 mm bore uses 1/4 inch PT cylinder ports and accepts Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 mounts (omitting FB, CA, CB, and CR). The 20 mm carbon steel rod and M16x1.5 thread offer robust side-load capacity, though strokes of 300 mm or more require an external guide. Without a -S magnet, it cannot host CMSE or DMSE sensors.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X150 FAQ

The integrated clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 1400 N. It locks the 20 mm rod at any position bidirectionally, but only after the cylinder has come to a complete stop.

The clamp is released via a third G1/8 enclasp port, but only after the air pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced. Releasing without balanced pressure can cause the rod to jump abruptly.
