About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X250

The AirTAC BSAID50X250 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod configuration and a built-in spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It provides a static holding force of 1400 N and can secure the load at any position along its 250 mm stroke. Because it is a double-rod unit, the thrust is equal in both directions at 825 N (0.5 MPa), and the second rod allows you to mount a workpiece on one end and a guide or counterweight on the opposite end for dual-side anti-rotation.

It is crucial to distinguish this 1400 N holding force from the 825 N cylinder thrust: the clamp secures the static load, while the thrust moves it. The clamp locks only after the rod has stopped, meaning it cannot brake a moving load. Additionally, the variable air cushion at the stroke ends only decelerates the piston near the end of travel; the clamp is the sole mechanism that holds the load. A third G1/8 enclasp port supplies the 0.15-0.7 MPa air to release the lock.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

1400 N
static holding force (Ø50 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø50mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa982 N825 N
0.7 MPa (max)1374 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (1400 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X250 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Lift Holding

Secures a mid-stroke vertical load on a double-rod platform, preventing a suspended workpiece from dropping when air pressure drops.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Holds a part rigidly at a specific travel point for machining or inspection, using the opposing rod for a counterweight or guide.

shield

Emergency Drop Prevention

Engages instantly upon power loss to freeze the rod at its current location, stopping sudden falls on vertical axes.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X250 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this BSAID50X250 when you need equal force both ways and a rod extending from both ends to mount a secondary tool or position flag. If your application only requires holding at the stroke end, a plain SAI or SAIL cylinder suffices. Step down to a bore 40 unit for 528 N thrust and 900 N holding, or up to a bore 63 unit for 1402 N thrust and 2200 N holding. Since this stroke is 250 mm, the 20 mm rod handles side loads well, but longer unsupported strokes still benefit from an external guide. This model uses PT tapered ports (cylinder port 1/4, enclasp port G1/8), carbon steel rods, and accepts Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, or TCM2 mounts (omitting FB/CA/CB/CR). No magnet is specified, so it will not host CMSE or DMSE sensors.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load
  • ✓ Balanced-pressure unlock circuit
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X250 FAQ

The clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 1400 N. It engages via a spring to hold the rod at any position along the stroke, operating entirely independently from the 825 N cylinder thrust.

The clamp locks only after the rod has stopped moving; it cannot brake a moving load. To unlock it safely, the air pressures on both sides of the piston must be balanced, otherwise the rod may jump abruptly. Safety-critical applications require an additional independent safety measure.
