About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X80

The AirTAC BSAID50X80 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a rod out both ends and a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock mechanism. It delivers an equal thrust of 825 N in both directions at 0.5 MPa. The built-in enclasp gripper secures the carbon steel rod at any position along its 80 mm travel, providing a static holding force of 1400 N. It is crucial to distinguish this holding force from the cylinder thrust; you must size the clamp capacity against the static load, not the pneumatic push or pull force.

This bidirectional clamp holds the load whether the rod was extending or retracting, but it only engages after the cylinder has stopped, meaning it cannot brake a moving rod. Unlocking requires balanced air pressure on both sides of the piston via the dedicated G1/8 enclasp port, preventing abrupt rod jumps. The double-rod design allows mounting a workpiece on one end and a guide or position flag on the other for dual-side anti-rotation. Additionally, the variable air cushion at stroke ends only decelerates the piston, while the clamp provides the actual load holding.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

1400 N
static holding force (Ø50 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø50mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa982 N825 N
0.7 MPa (max)1374 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (1400 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X80 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Axis Hold

Secures a vertically lifted load at any intermediate height using the 1400 N clamp, preventing gravity-driven drops when air pressure is removed.

shield

Power Loss Safety

Engages automatically upon air loss to freeze the double-rod position mid-stroke, protecting processes and operators during emergency shutdowns.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Hold

Locks the workpiece rigidly at a precise custom stroke point for machining or inspection, using the opposite rod end for a guide.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X80 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this double-rod model when you need equal thrust both ways and dual-side guidance for tools or flags. If your application only requires locking at the stroke end, a SAIL cylinder suffices, but choose this BSAID to hold securely anywhere in the 80 mm travel. For higher loads, stepping up to a 63 mm bore provides 1402 N thrust and a 2200 N holding force. Remember that the clamp locks only after the rod stops and must be released with balanced pressures; human-safety-critical applications require an independent safety measure.

To replace this unit, match the double-rod configuration, 50 mm bore, 80 mm stroke, and PT port threads. The 20 mm rod and M16x1.5 thread offer good side-load resistance. Mounting options for this double-rod type omit FB, CA, CB, and CR, accepting only Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2. Since no magnet is specified, position sensing requires adding a -S option to use AirTAC CMSE reed or DMSE electronic sensors.

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X80 FAQ

The clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 1400 N. It engages a spring-applied gripper on the rod to hold the load securely at any position along the 80 mm stroke, independent of the 825 N pneumatic thrust.

The clamp unlocks only when air pressure is balanced on both sides of the piston via the G1/8 enclasp port. The rod must be stopped first; releasing the clamp with unbalanced pressures can cause abrupt rod movement.
