About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X900

The AirTAC BSAID50X900 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a rod extending from both ends and a built-in spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It delivers a bidirectional holding force of 1400 N at any position along its 900 mm stroke. Because it is a double-rod design, the thrust is equal in both directions at 825 N (0.5 MPa), and the second rod allows you to mount a guide, counterweight, or position flag on the opposite end for dual-side anti-rotation. Remember that the 1400 N static holding force is a distinct quantity from the 825 N thrust; you must size the clamp capacity against the static load, not the cylinder's motive force.

This enclasp mechanism operates via a third G1/8 unlock port, separate from the two 1/4 cylinder ports, requiring 0.15-0.7 MPa to release. The clamp locks only after the rod has stopped, meaning it cannot brake a moving load. Furthermore, it must be unlocked with balanced air pressures on both sides of the piston to prevent the rod from jumping abruptly. The variable air cushion at stroke ends only decelerates the piston; it does not hold the load. This unit lacks a magnet, so it is not compatible with CMSE or DMSE sensors.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

1400 N
static holding force (Ø50 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø50mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa982 N825 N
0.7 MPa (max)1374 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (1400 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X900 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Mid-Stroke Z-Axis Hold

Locks a vertical load at any point in the 900 mm travel, preventing drops during an air pressure loss without relying on end-of-stroke stops.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Holds a dual-sided workpiece fixture rigidly in place during drilling or inspection, using the second rod for an anti-rotation guide.

build

Long-Stroke Assembly Brake

Secures a heavy gantry component exactly where it stopped along the 900 mm stroke, engaging only after motion ceases to prevent drifting.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X900 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this BSAID50X900 when you need a double-rod layout for dual-side guidance and true mid-stroke holding. If you do not need the second rod, the single-rod BSAI50X900 offers the same 1400 N hold but with unequal push/pull thrust. If you only need to hold at the stroke ends, a plain SAIL50 saves cost; if you need no lock at all, a standard SAID50 suffices. To step up holding power, the bore 63 version provides 2200 N of hold and 1402 N pull thrust at 0.5 MPa.

For replacement, match the double-rod design, 50 mm bore, 900 mm stroke, and PT port threads. The BSAID mounting set omits FB, CA, CB, and CR brackets, accepting only Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2. Because this stroke is 900 mm, the long unsupported rod requires an external guide to prevent excessive side-loading on the 20 mm carbon steel rod and M16x1.5 thread. Always ensure the cylinder has stopped and pressures are balanced before unlocking to avoid sudden rod movement, and add an independent safety measure for human-safety-critical holds.

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID50X900 FAQ

The built-in clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 1400 N at any position along the stroke. This is separate from the 825 N thrust that moves the load. The clamp holds the load only after the rod has completely stopped.

The clamp uses a third G1/8 port and requires 0.15-0.7 MPa to release. You must balance the air pressures on both sides of the piston before unlocking, otherwise the rod can jump abruptly. It cannot brake a moving rod.
