About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID63X250

The AirTAC BSAID63X250 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod design and a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock mechanism. It delivers 1402 N of thrust in both directions at 0.5 MPa and secures the load at any position along the 250 mm stroke with a static holding force of 2200 N. Remember that holding force and thrust are separate values; you must size the 2200 N clamp against your static load, not the cylinder's push thrust.

The dual-rod configuration allows mounting a workpiece on one end and a guide or position flag on the opposite end for dual-side anti-rotation. It uses a 3/8 cylinder port plus a separate G1/8 enclasp port for the unlock pressure (0.15-0.7 MPa). Note that the variable air cushion only decelerates the piston near stroke end; the mechanical clamp is what actually holds the load.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

2200 N
static holding force (Ø63 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø63mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa1559 N1402 N
0.7 MPa (max)2182 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (2200 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID63X250 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Axis Hold

Prevents gravity-driven drops on vertical lifts by clamping the rod securely at any point in the travel, maintaining position during air pressure loss.

lock

Mid-Stroke Machining

Locks the dual rods at a specific intermediate position to rigidly hold a workpiece for machining or inspection without reaching the stroke ends.

precision_manufacturing

Dual-Side Tooling

Supports mounting a primary tool on one rod end and a counterweight or alignment guide on the opposite end, preventing rotation during clamped operations.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID63X250 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this double-rod model when you need equal bidirectional force and dual-side guidance. If you do not need the second rod, step down to the single-rod BSAI63X250. If your load is lighter, the 50 mm bore offers 825 N thrust and 1400 N holding force. If you only need to hold at stroke ends, a plain SAI or SAIL cylinder suffices, but BSAID locks anywhere.

This clamp locks only after the rod stops; it cannot brake a moving load. Unlocking requires balanced air pressure on both piston sides, or the rod may jump. For human-safety critical applications, add an independent safety measure. Replacement requires a double-rod, 63 mm bore, 250 mm stroke, PT ports, and the BSAID mounting set (Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, TCM2; FB/CA/CB/CR are omitted). The 20 mm rod and M16x1.5 thread handle side loads well, but for strokes over 300 mm, use an external guide.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load
  • ✓ Balanced-pressure unlock circuit
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID63X250 FAQ

The built-in clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 2200 N. It is bidirectional and engages via spring pressure to hold the double rod securely at any position along the stroke.

The clamp unlocks only when air pressure (0.15-0.7 MPa) is applied to the G1/8 enclasp port AND the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced. If pressures are unbalanced, the rod can move abruptly upon release.
