About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID63X50

The AirTAC BSAID63X50 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod layout and a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It delivers a bidirectional holding force of 2200 N at any point along its 50 mm travel. Because it is a double-rod unit, its thrust is equal in both directions at 1402 N (0.5 MPa), and the dual output shafts allow you to mount a workpiece on one end and a guide or counterweight on the other for anti-rotation. The enclasp mechanism uses a separate G1/8 unlock port requiring 0.15-0.7 MPa.

It is vital to separate holding force from cylinder thrust: the 2200 N clamp grip secures the static load independently of the 1402 N motion force, meaning you size the hold against the load weight, not the push thrust. The variable air cushions only decelerate the piston near stroke ends; they do not hold the load. Furthermore, the clamp locks only after the rod has completely stopped, so it cannot brake a moving load.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

2200 N
static holding force (Ø63 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø63mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa1559 N1402 N
0.7 MPa (max)2182 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (2200 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID63X50 Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Axis Hold

Prevents gravity-driven drops on vertical lifts by clamping the rod securely at any mid-stroke elevation during power loss.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Freezes the double-rod carriage at an exact machining coordinate, using the second rod end for a position flag.

shield

Emergency Stop Safety

Holds a workpiece stationary when the air supply drops, though an independent mechanical stop is required for human safety.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID63X50 the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this double-rod BSAID63X50 when your fixture needs dual-side guidance or a secondary tool mounted opposite the primary workpiece. If you only require a single extension and stroke-end locking, the SAIL63 series suffices, but choose this BSAID when mid-stroke holding is essential. To step up holding capacity, the 80 mm bore offers 3600 N grip and 2268 N pull thrust; to step down, the 50 mm bore provides 1400 N grip and 825 N pull.

For safe operation, the clamp must be released only when air pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod may jump abruptly. Safety-critical applications require an additional independent measure. This unit uses PT tapered threads, a 20 mm carbon steel rod with an M16x1.5 thread, and accepts Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, or TCM2 mounts (omitting FB/CA/CB/CR). Without a magnet (-S), it cannot use CMSE or DMSE sensors.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load
  • ✓ Balanced-pressure unlock circuit
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID63X50 FAQ

The clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 2200 N. It engages via spring force and locks the rod bidirectionally at any position, but only after the cylinder has stopped moving.

The clamp releases via air pressure applied to the G1/8 enclasp port. You must balance the air pressures on both sides of the piston before unlocking, otherwise the rod can move abruptly.
