About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID63X50S

The AirTAC BSAID63X50-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod layout and a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It secures the piston rod at any point along its 50mm travel, delivering a static holding force of 2200 N. Because it is a double-rod actuator, the thrust is equal in both directions at 1402 N (pull value at 0.5 MPa), and the second rod extending from the rear cover is ideal for mounting a position flag, a secondary guide, or a counterweight for dual-side anti-rotation.

A critical distinction exists between holding force and thrust: the 2200 N clamp rating is the mechanism's capacity to resist a static load, which is entirely separate from the 1402 N pneumatic thrust that moves the load. Furthermore, the variable air cushion at stroke ends only decelerates the piston; it does not hold the load. The clamp mechanism engages via a separate G1/8 enclasp port and requires balanced cylinder pressures to unlock safely, preventing the rod from jumping abruptly upon release.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

2200 N
static holding force (Ø63 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø63mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa1559 N1402 N
0.7 MPa (max)2182 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (2200 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Vertical Load Holding

Secures elevated masses at any point along the vertical stroke, preventing drops during sudden air pressure loss.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Holds a dual-side workpiece fixture dead still against machining forces without relying on live air pressure.

Dual-Tool Actuation

Drives a primary tool on the front rod while using the rear rod for a counterweight or anti-rotation guide.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID63X50S the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 63mm bore model when an application demands 1402 N of thrust in both directions alongside a robust 2200 N holding capability. If your load is lighter, the 50mm bore offers 825 N of equal thrust and 1400 N of holding force, whereas the 80mm bore steps up to 2268 N thrust and 3600 N holding force for heavier workpieces. Select the BSAID double-rod configuration over the single-rod BSAI when you need to attach a tool or guide to the rear rod or require dual-side guidance to prevent rotation. Alternatively, if you only need to hold a load at the stroke ends, a plain SAID cylinder suffices, while a SAIL locks only at the end of travel.

As a replacement match, verify the 63mm bore, 50mm stroke, double-rod layout, PT port threads, and the -S magnet for CMSE reed and DMSE electronic sensors. The BSAID mounting set accepts Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 brackets, deliberately omitting the FB, CA, CB, and CR mounts due to the rear rod. Remember that the clamp locks only after the cylinder has stopped moving and cannot brake a moving rod; safety-critical applications require an additional independent safety measure.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load
  • ✓ Balanced-pressure unlock circuit

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID63X50S FAQ

The clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 2200 N and can secure the load at any position along the 50mm stroke, rather than only at the end caps.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released via a G1/8 port. You must balance the air pressures on both sides of the piston before unlocking, otherwise the rod may move abruptly. It only locks after the rod stops and cannot brake a moving load.
