About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID63X80S

The AirTAC BSAID63X80-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock mechanism. A defining trait of this double-rod series is that it delivers equal thrust in both directions, generating 1402 N of pull force at 0.5 MPa on either side. The integrated enclasp gripper locks the piston rod at any position along its 80 mm travel, delivering a robust static holding force of 2200 N. It is crucial to distinguish this holding force from the cylinder thrust; you must size the clamp's holding capacity against your static load, not the pneumatic push or pull force.

Because it is a double-rod actuator, one end can mount the workpiece while the opposite end attaches a guide, counterweight, or position flag for dual-side guidance and anti-rotation. The clamp operates via a third G1/8 enclasp port, requiring 0.15-0.7 MPa to release. Remember that the variable air cushion only decelerates the piston near stroke ends; the mechanical clamp is what actually secures the load. The lock engages only after the rod has stopped, so it cannot brake a moving rod, and it must be unlocked with balanced pressures to prevent the rod from jumping abruptly.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

2200 N
static holding force (Ø63 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø63mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa1559 N1402 N
0.7 MPa (max)2182 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (2200 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID63X80S Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Lift Holding

Secures elevated loads at any point along the vertical stroke, preventing gravity-driven drops during air pressure loss.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Freezes the double-rod position securely mid-stroke so workpieces remain perfectly aligned during secondary machining or inspection.

shield

Power Failure Safety

The spring-applied clamp engages automatically upon loss of release pressure, holding the load firmly in place anywhere in its travel.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID63X80S the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 63 mm bore model when an application requires 1402 N of thrust both ways alongside a 2200 N static hold at any mid-stroke position. If your load is lighter, stepping down to a 50 mm bore provides 825 N of equal thrust and a 1400 N hold. If you only need to secure a load at the stroke end, a SAIL cylinder suffices, but BSAID is required for true lock-anywhere capability. For a standard non-locking double-rod actuator, a plain SAID is the better fit. This BSAID63X80-S variant includes a magnet for CMSE reed and DMSE electronic sensors. It features PT tapered port threads, a 3/8 cylinder port, and accepts Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, or TCM2 mountings (omitting FB, CA, CB, and CR). The 20 mm rod and M16x1.5 thread provide excellent side-load resilience, though external guidance is advised for unsupported loads.

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID63X80S FAQ

The integrated clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 2200 N. It locks the rod at any position along the stroke, but only engages after the cylinder has stopped moving; it cannot brake a moving rod.

The clamp is released by supplying 0.15-0.7 MPa of air to the G1/8 enclasp port. To prevent the rod from jumping abruptly, the air pressures on both sides of the piston must be balanced before unlocking, and the cylinder must be fully stopped.
