The AirTAC Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X160 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 cylinder with a Ø80mm bore, 160mm stroke and a spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock that holds the rod at ANY position along its travel — with a static holding force of 3600 N.
The AirTAC BSAID80X160 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod configuration and a built-in clamp-lock mechanism. A spring-applied, air-released enclasp gripper engages the rod to hold the load securely at any position along the 160 mm stroke, delivering a static holding force of 3600 N. Because it is a double-rod unit, the thrust is equal in both directions at 2268 N (the pull-side value at 0.5 MPa). It is vital to distinguish this holding force from the cylinder thrust: the 3600 N clamp rating dictates the static load capacity, whereas the 2268 N thrust governs the dynamic motion capability.
The double-rod design serves a specific mechanical purpose beyond equal force, allowing you to mount a workpiece on one end and a guide, counterweight, or position flag on the opposite end for dual-side anti-rotation guidance. The clamp mechanism relies on a third G1/8 enclasp port to release the rod, requiring a balanced air pressure between 0.15-0.7 MPa on both sides of the piston to unlock safely. Remember that the variable air cushion only decelerates the piston near stroke ends; it is the mechanical clamp that holds the load, not the cushion.

Specifications follow the official AirTAC BSAI datasheet (ISO 15552). Operating pressure is 0.15–0.7 MPa (lower than a plain SAI). Port options: PT / G.
A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.
| Pressure | Push force | Pull force |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 MPa | 2513 N | 2268 N |
| 0.7 MPa (max) | 3519 N | — |
Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (3600 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.
Maintains a 3600 N static hold on a vertical load at any intermediate stroke position, preventing gravity-driven drops during cycle pauses.
The spring-applied clamp engages automatically upon air loss, securing the guided load wherever it stopped in the 160 mm travel.
Locks the dual-rod axis rigidly in place for secondary machining or inspection, ensuring the workpiece mount and opposite-end guide remain perfectly stationary.
Choose this 80 mm bore model when your application requires substantial equal bidirectional thrust (2268 N at 0.5 MPa) and a mid-stroke hold. If you need less force, the 63 mm bore offers 1402 N thrust and a 2200 N hold; if you need more, the 100 mm bore provides 3681 N thrust and a 5500 N hold. This BSAID variant is preferred over a plain SAID when power-failure holding is required anywhere in the travel, and over a SAIL unit when locking strictly at stroke ends is insufficient. The 25 mm carbon steel rod and M20x1.5 thread provide excellent side-load resistance.
For safe operation, note that the clamp locks only after the cylinder has stopped; it cannot brake a moving rod. You must balance the air pressure on both sides to unlock the unit, or the rod may jump abruptly. Safety-critical loads require an additional independent safety measure. This BSAID80X160 features PT tapered ports (3/8 cylinder, G1/8 enclasp), a standard 160 mm stroke, and accepts Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2 mounts (omitting FB/CA/CB/CR). Sensors are not included unless a -S magnet is specified, which supports AirTAC CMSE reed and DMSE electronic switches.
Quick checklist
The built-in clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 3600 N. It is spring-applied and air-released, engaging the rod to hold the load securely at any position along the 160 mm stroke.
The clamp cannot brake a moving rod; it locks only after the cylinder has stopped. To release it safely, you must apply air to the G1/8 enclasp port while balancing the pressure on both sides of the piston, otherwise the rod may jump abruptly.
