About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X250S

The AirTAC BSAID80X250-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a rod out both ends and a built-in spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It delivers an equal thrust of 2268 N in both directions at 0.5 MPa, while the integrated enclasp mechanism provides a static holding force of 3600 N. Because holding force and thrust are separate quantities, you must size the 3600 N clamp capacity against your static load, not the cylinder's push/pull thrust.

This double-rod design lets you mount a workpiece on one end and a guide or position flag on the opposite end for dual-side anti-rotation. The clamp locks the rod at any position along the 250 mm stroke, but it only engages after the piston stops; it cannot brake a moving load. A third G1/8 enclasp port supplies the unlock pressure, and the variable air cushion solely decelerates the piston near stroke ends without holding the load.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

3600 N
static holding force (Ø80 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø80mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa2513 N2268 N
0.7 MPa (max)3519 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (3600 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X250S Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Axis Load Holding

Freezes a lifted workpiece at any height along the 250 mm travel with 3600 N of holding force during a complete air pressure loss.

precision_manufacturing

Mid-Stroke Machining Hold

Secures the dual rods at a precise intermediate point for machining or inspection, using the second rod end for a position flag.

shield

Emergency Safety Stop

Provides a bidirectional static hold once the piston stops moving, preventing unintended drift on double-acting assemblies.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X250S the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this 80 mm bore if your application needs the 3600 N holding force to secure a load mid-stroke; step down to a 63 mm bore (1402 N pull thrust, 2200 N hold) for lighter loads, or up to a 100 mm bore (3681 N pull thrust, 5500 N hold) for heavier static masses. Select BSAID over a stroke-end-only SAIL when you must freeze the load anywhere in the travel. If you just need equal bidirectional thrust without mid-stroke holding, a plain SAID suffices.

For safe operation, the clamp locks only after the cylinder stops and must be released with balanced air pressures on both sides to prevent the rod from jumping. Human-safety-critical loads require an additional independent safety measure. This replacement features a carbon steel rod, PT tapered ports (3/8 cylinder, G1/8 enclasp), and the -S magnet for CMSE reed and DMSE electronic sensors. The BSAID mounting set omits FB, CA, CB, and CR, accepting only Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, and TCM2. The 25 mm rod and M20x1.5 thread handle high side loads, but at 250 mm stroke an external guide is still advised.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at any position?
  • ✓ Or stroke-end only → use SAIL
  • ✓ Holding force ≥ your load

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X250S FAQ

The integrated clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 3600 N. It engages via a spring to hold the double rod at any position bidirectionally, but only after the cylinder has fully stopped moving.

The clamp is released by supplying 0.15-0.7 MPa to the G1/8 enclasp port, but only after the air pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced. If pressures are unbalanced, the rod can jump abruptly upon release.
