About the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X500S

The AirTAC BSAID80X500-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a double-rod layout and an integrated spring-applied, air-released clamp-lock. It secures the piston rod at any position along its 500 mm travel, providing a static holding force of 3600 N. Because it is a double-rod unit, thrust is equal in both directions at 2268 N (pull at 0.5 MPa). Remember that holding force and thrust are distinct metrics; size the clamp's 3600 N capacity against your static load, not the cylinder's propulsion force.

The dual-rod design allows mounting a workpiece on one end and a counterweight, position flag, or guidance fixture on the opposite end, delivering dual-side anti-rotation stability. This enclasp mechanism utilizes a third G1/8 PT port for unlocking, requiring balanced air pressure on both piston sides to prevent the rod from jumping abruptly upon release. Furthermore, the variable air cushions only decelerate the piston near stroke ends; they do not hold the load, as only the mechanical clamp provides true static positioning.

How the Clamp-Lock Holds

3600 N
static holding force (Ø80 mm)

A spring-applied gripper clamps the rod and holds the load at any position in the stroke — not just at the stroke end (that is a SAIL) — and it is bidirectional: it holds whether the rod was extending or retracting.

Safety: the clamp locks only AFTER the rod has stopped — it is not a moving-rod brake. Unlock only when the pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced, or the rod can move abruptly. If human safety depends on the hold, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø80mm)

PressurePush forcePull force
0.5 MPa2513 N2268 N
0.7 MPa (max)3519 N

Equal force both directions (double rod). Rated to the 0.7 MPa operating maximum for this series. The clamp holding force (3600 N) is separate from cylinder thrust. Size with a margin.

Where the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X500S Is Used

vertical_align_center

Vertical Axis Load Holding

Secures a vertically lifted payload at any point in the 500 mm stroke, preventing gravity-driven drops during a compressed air failure.

precision_manufacturing

Machining Position Lock

Holds a dual-side workpiece rigidly in place for machining or inspection, using the second rod for an anti-rotation guide.

Mid-Stroke Safety Stop

Provides emergency holding power anywhere along the travel path, ensuring the load stays put when the machine halts unexpectedly.

Is the Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X500S the Right Clamp-Lock?

Choose this double-rod model when symmetrical force and dual-side mounting are required. If your application only needs a single extending rod, the BSAI80X500-S offers the same 3600 N holding capacity. To adjust holding power, stepping down to a 63 mm bore drops the clamp force to 2200 N (pull thrust 1402 N), while moving up to a 100 mm bore increases the hold to 5500 N. If holding is only needed at the stroke ends rather than mid-travel, a plain SAI cylinder suffices.

This clamp locks only after the rod has stopped moving; it cannot brake a dynamic load. Safety-critical applications require an additional independent safety measure. At 500 mm of stroke, the long unsupported rod demands an external guide to prevent side-load wear. The unit includes a -S magnet for CMSE (reed) and DMSE (solid-state) sensors. Replacement requires matching the double rod, 80 mm bore, 500 mm stroke, 3/8 cylinder port, G1/8 enclasp port, and the BSAID mounting set (Basic, FA, LB, TC, TCM1, TCM2), which omits FB, CA, CB, and CR brackets.

Airtac BSAID Clamp Cylinder BSAID80X500S FAQ

The integrated clamp-lock provides a static holding force of 3600 N. It engages via a spring mechanism and can hold the rod securely at any position within the 500 mm stroke, operating independently of the cylinder's 2268 N thrust.

The clamp is released by supplying air to the G1/8 enclasp port, but only after the air pressures on both sides of the piston are balanced. If pressures are unbalanced, the rod can jump abruptly. The lock holds only after the rod stops; it will not brake a moving load.
