Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X125S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X125S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø160mm bore, 125mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X125S

The AirTAC SAILB160X125-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. A carbon steel rod delivers substantial force, pushing with 14074N and pulling with 9425N at 0.7MPa. The spring-applied, air-released lock engages automatically when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end, securing the load without relying on continuous live air pressure. This makes it ideal for heavy vertical loads that must remain safely held during a pneumatic power loss.

Because the lock occupies one end, the variable air cushion at the locker end is shorter, measuring 28mm compared to the 50mm cushion at the free end. The integrated -S magnet supports position detection via AirTAC CMSE reed switches or DMSE solid-state electronic sensors. For unlocking, operators can supply release air to the dedicated port for automatic retraction or use the manual release lever during setup and maintenance.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X125S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Safety

Holds heavy raised platforms securely at the retracted stroke end during air pressure loss to prevent sudden drops.

Heavy Clamp Holding

Maintains high-force clamping on large workpieces at the stroke terminal without consuming continuous pneumatic energy.

Gate and Barrier Lock

Secures heavy industrial gates in the closed position mechanically, requiring active air release to unlock.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X125S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 160mm bore when the 100mm bore (5497N push at 0.7MPa) is insufficient for your heavy-load holding requirements. Select the SAILB configuration because the lock is in the back cover, meaning it holds the load securely at the retracted rod-in position. If your application requires the load to be held at the extended rod-out position, you must choose the SAILF variant instead. For operations that need clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than a stroke-end terminal, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice.

Remember that this is a static holding lock that engages only after the cylinder stops, not a dynamic brake for a moving rod. Valve selection is critical: never use a fast-exhaust valve with this cylinder, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock; always use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. If human safety depends on the load remaining suspended, add an independent mechanical safety measure. To replace this unit, match the 160mm bore, 125mm stroke, back locker position, PT tapered port threads, and the -S magnet option.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X125S FAQ

At an operating pressure of 0.7MPa, this 160mm bore cylinder provides a push force of 14074N and a pull force of 9425N. The maximum operating pressure is 1.0MPa.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, located in the back cover. It engages statically when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end, holding the load without live pressure. It does not lock at mid-stroke. Unlocking is achieved automatically by supplying release air or manually via the lever.
