Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X160

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X160 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø160mm bore, 160mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X160

The AirTAC SAILB160X160 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock integrated into the back cover. This mechanism engages automatically to secure the rod at the retracted stroke end, maintaining the load position without requiring continuous live air pressure. It delivers substantial thrust, providing 10053N of pull force at 0.5MPa and up to 18095N of push force at 0.9MPa.

Because the lock engages statically at the stroke terminal, the variable air cushion at the locker end is intentionally shorter, measuring 28mm compared to the 50mm cushion on the free end. The standard carbon steel rod provides excellent side-load resistance, and you can add a magnet for CMSE reed or DMSE solid-state sensors if position detection is required.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø160mm)

0.5 MPa10053 N9425 N

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X160 Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Safety

Holds heavy lifted platforms securely at the retracted stroke end the moment compressed air is cut, preventing sudden drops during power loss.

precision_manufacturing

Heavy Clamping Hold

Maintains massive clamping force on large workpieces without consuming continuous air, engaging only after the rod reaches the retracted terminal.

build

Press Retention

Secures heavy press platens in the retracted position safely, utilizing the mechanical lock rather than relying on constant pneumatic pressure.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X160 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Select this 160mm bore when an application demands high force load-holding at the retracted position during a power loss. If your thrust requirements are lower, stepping down to a 125mm bore yields 5734N of pull at 0.5MPa. Choose this SAILB configuration specifically when the load must be held rod-in; select the SAILF variant instead if you need to secure the extended rod-out position. If your process requires locking at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than the stroke end, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct alternative.

Remember that this lock is a static holding device, not a dynamic brake for a moving rod. Avoid using fast-exhaust valves, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock; always use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. For any safety-critical lifting application, install an independent mechanical safety measure alongside the cylinder. This model features PT tapered ports and supports standard ISO 15552 mountings including Basic, FA, FB, CA, CB, CR, LB, TC, FTC, TCM1, and TCM2.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X160 FAQ

At 0.5MPa, it provides 10053N of pull force and 14074N of push force. At 0.9MPa, the push force increases to 18095N, with a maximum rated force equivalent to 2050 kgf at 1.0MPa.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, located in the back cover to hold the rod securely at the retracted stroke end. It engages statically after the cylinder stops and is never to be used as a dynamic brake. Unlocking is achieved automatically by supplying release air or by using the manual release lever.
