Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X160S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X160S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø160mm bore, 160mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X160S

The AirTAC SAILB160X160-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. Because it is a SAILB configuration, the spring-applied, air-released lock engages when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end. In the 160mm bore class, this actuator generates a push thrust of 10053N and a pull thrust of 9425N at 0.5 MPa, making it suitable for heavy-load vertical holding. The standard carbon steel rod provides robust durability under high stress.

This model includes a piston magnet (-S) for position sensing with AirTAC CMSE reed or DMSE solid-state switches. The variable air cushion at the locker end is 28mm, intentionally shorter than the 50mm cushion at the free end to accommodate the locking mechanism. The lock itself is a static holding device that engages after the cylinder stops; it is not a dynamic brake for a moving rod.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Gate Holding

Secures heavy industrial gates or safety barriers in the closed position mechanically until release air is supplied.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X160S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 160mm bore cylinder when an application demands high force retention at the rod-in position upon power loss. If your thrust requirements are lower, stepping down to a 125mm bore provides 6136N of push force at 0.5 MPa. Conversely, if you need to hold the load at the extended rod-out position, select the SAILF equivalent instead of this SAILB model. If the machinery requires locking at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than the stroke end, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice.

For safe operation, never use a fast-exhaust valve with this lock cylinder; always use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve because back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock. The 3/4 PT port handles the airflow for the 30-500 mm/s speed range. Since human safety may depend on the load staying up, always add an independent safety measure alongside this static lock. Replacement requires matching the 160mm bore, 160mm stroke, back locker position, and -S magnet.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X160S FAQ

At 0.5 MPa, this 160mm bore cylinder provides a push force of 10053N and a pull force of 9425N. The maximum push force reaches 18095N at 0.9 MPa.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, located in the back cover to hold the rod only at the retracted stroke end. It engages statically after the cylinder stops and unlocks automatically via air supply or manually via the release lever.
