Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X175

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X175 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø160mm bore, 175mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X175

The AirTAC SAILB160X175 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock housed in the back cover. This integrated lock engages when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end, securely holding the rod and load in place without requiring continuous live air pressure. It delivers substantial thrust, providing 14074N of push force and 9425N of pull force at 0.7 MPa, making it well-suited for heavy-duty industrial automation.

A key design feature of this SAILB variant is the shorter variable air cushion at the locker end (28 mm) compared to the standard free end (50 mm). The lock itself is a static holding device that engages only after the cylinder has stopped; it is not a dynamic brake for a moving rod. For position sensing, adding a -S magnet allows the use of AirTAC CMSE reed or DMSE electronic solid-state switches in the dual sensor grooves.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X175 Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Power-Off Hold

Secures heavy elevated loads in the retracted position instantly upon air pressure loss, preventing sudden drops in heavy lifting presses.

shield

Machine Safety Gate

Locks a safety barrier closed at the rod-in stroke end during machine operation, requiring an active air signal to release and open.

precision_manufacturing

Heavy Clamp Retraction

Holds a large clamping arm firmly retracted and out of the way during part ejection, maintaining a clear workspace without consuming continuous air.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X175 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Select this 160 mm bore cylinder when an application requires massive load holding at the rod-in position; if less force is needed, a 125 mm bore provides 8590N push at 0.7 MPa. Choose SAILB to secure the retracted end, or SAILF if the extended end must be held. If your process requires clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than a stroke-end terminal, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct alternative.

When integrating this model, adhere to strict valve selection guidelines: never use a fast-exhaust valve, and always utilize an independent-exhaust solenoid valve, because back-pressure on the locker side can inadvertently release the lock. The 40 mm carbon steel rod and PT 3/4 tapered port provide robust side-load resistance and high flow. If human safety depends on the load remaining retracted, always add an independent mechanical safety measure alongside the lock.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X175 FAQ

At 0.7 MPa operating pressure, this 160 mm bore cylinder generates 14074N of push force and 9425N of pull force. The maximum operating pressure is 1.0 MPa.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, engaging only at the retracted stroke end to provide a static hold without live pressure. It unlocks automatically via an air signal to the release port or via a manual release lever. It does not clamp at mid-stroke.
