Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X225

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X225 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø160mm bore, 225mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X225

The AirTAC SAILB160X225 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock housed in the back cover. This lock engages automatically to hold the rod securely at the retracted stroke end whenever release air is cut, maintaining load position without relying on live pressure. It delivers substantial thrust, providing 14074N push and 9425N pull at 0.7 MPa, driven by a 40mm carbon steel rod.

Because the lock occupies the rear end, the variable air cushion on that side is shortened to 28mm compared to the 50mm cushion on the free end. The cylinder operates at 30-500 mm/s and uses a 3/4 PT port. While it provides static holding after the piston stops, it is not a dynamic brake for a moving rod, and mid-stroke clamping requires a different BSAI series model.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Theoretical Output Force (Ø160mm)

0.5 MPa10053 N9425 N

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X225 Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Power-Off Hold

Secures elevated heavy platens in the retracted position instantly upon air loss, preventing uncontrolled drops during power failures.

lock

Retracted Safety Clamping

Holds heavy machining fixtures firmly back at the stroke end without consuming continuous compressed air during operation.

shield

Lift Gate Locking

Keeps industrial gates and safety barriers locked shut in the retracted terminal position until the air-release port is actively pressurized.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X225 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 160mm bore when 100mm bore output (5497N push at 0.7 MPa) is insufficient, or step down to 125mm (8590N push) if your load is lighter. Select the SAILB configuration when the load must be held in the retracted position; choose SAILF if the extended end requires holding. If your application needs the rod clamped at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than a stroke end, select the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder instead.

This 225mm stroke is non-standard (exceeding the 1500mm maximum standard is not the case here, but 225 is not a standard catalog increment). For any stroke of 300mm or more, external guide rails are recommended to manage side loads, though at 225mm ensuring rigid mounting is still advised. To maintain lock integrity, never use a fast-exhaust valve; use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock. Always add an independent mechanical safety measure if human safety depends on the load staying up. Replacement parts must match the 160mm bore, 225mm stroke, back lock position, 3/4 PT port, and standard carbon steel rod.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X225 FAQ

At 0.7 MPa operating pressure, the 160mm bore provides 14074N of push force and 9425N of pull force. At 0.9 MPa, the push force increases to 18095N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, located in the back cover to hold the rod only at the retracted stroke end. It engages statically after the cylinder stops and is released by supplying air to the release port or by using the manual release lever.
