Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X225S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X225S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø160mm bore, 225mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X225S

The AirTAC SAILB160X225-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. Because the lock is spring-applied and air-released, cutting the release air drives a lock pin into the carbon steel rod, securely holding the load at the retracted stroke end without relying on live pressure. In this bore size, the cylinder generates 10053N of pull force at 0.5 MPa, making it highly capable for heavy vertical lifting tasks.

This model includes a magnetic piston for position detection using CMSE reed or DMSE electronic solid-state sensors. To unlock the rod, you can either supply air to the release port for automatic operation or use the manual release lever. Note that the variable air cushion at the locker end is 28mm, which is shorter than the 50mm cushion at the free end, a design adjustment made to accommodate the locking hardware inside the cover.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X225S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Heavy Vertical Lift Holding

Secures heavy lifted masses in the retracted position during a power loss, preventing sudden drops without needing continuous air pressure.

factory

Press Clamp Safety

Holds a heavy clamping load retracted at the stroke end, ensuring the press remains safely open during material loading.

build

Overhead Gate Retention

Locks an overhead gate in the closed position mechanically, resisting back-driving forces from wind or manual tampering.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X225S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 160mm bore if your application requires substantial holding power, offering 10053N pull at 0.5MPa, or step down to a 125mm bore providing 5734N if the load is lighter. Select the SAILB configuration when the load must be secured in the retracted position; if you need to hold the rod out, the SAILF variant is required instead. For applications demanding mid-stroke clamping at any arbitrary position, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice over this stroke-end-only lock.

Remember that this mechanical lock is a static holding device that engages after the cylinder stops, not a dynamic brake for a moving rod. Avoid using fast-exhaust valves, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock; always use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. For any human safety-critical lifting scenario, add an independent mechanical safety measure beyond the cylinder lock. When replacing this unit, match the 160mm bore, 225mm stroke, PT tapered port thread, back locker position, and the -S magnet option.

Quick checklist

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X225S FAQ

At 0.5 MPa, this 160mm bore cylinder provides 10053N of pull force and 14074N of push force. The maximum operating pressure is 1.0 MPa.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, engaging only when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end in the back cover. It provides a static hold after the rod stops and is unlocked automatically by supplying release air or manually via the release lever.
