Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X25

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X25 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø160mm bore, 25mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X25

The AirTAC SAILB160X25 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. A spring-applied, air-released lock pin engages when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end, securely holding the load without requiring live pressure. Supplying air to the release port or using the manual override lever unlocks the rod. In the 160mm bore class, it generates 10053N of pull force at 0.5MPa, making it highly capable of managing substantial vertical loads.

Because the lock occupies the rear end cap, the variable air cushion on the locker side is shorter, measured at 28mm compared to the 50mm cushion on the free end. This cylinder uses a carbon steel rod and PT threaded ports. It is crucial to note this is a static holding device that engages only after the cylinder stops, not a dynamic brake for a moving rod.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X25 Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Load Safety

Holds heavy lifted masses securely in the retracted position during air pressure loss, preventing sudden drops on vertical actuators.

shield

Power-Off Clamping

Maintains a rigid mechanical clamp on heavy workpieces at the inward stroke end without consuming continuous compressed air.

build

Gate and Guard Holding

Secures heavy safety gates or machine guards in the closed position, requiring an explicit air release signal to open.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X25 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Select this 160mm bore model when an application demands high force alongside guaranteed load holding at the retracted position upon power loss. If the retracted holding force of 10053N at 0.5MPa is excessive, stepping down to a 125mm bore yields 5734N of pull force at the same pressure. Conversely, moving up to a 200mm bore increases the pull force to 15080N at 0.5MPa. Choose the SAILB configuration specifically when the rod must be secured in the inward stroke end; select a SAILF variant if the load must be held extended.

If your machinery requires locking at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than the stroke end, the AirTAC BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct alternative. For the SAILB160X25, ensure the replacement matches the 160mm bore, 25mm stroke, back locker position, PT port threads, and standard carbon steel rod. Since this cylinder lacks a magnet, position sensing via CMSE reed or DMSE electronic switches is not possible without modification. Always use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve; utilizing a fast-exhaust valve can generate back-pressure on the locker side, inadvertently releasing the lock.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X25 FAQ

The 160mm bore generates a push force of 10053N and a pull force of 9425N at 0.5MPa. At the maximum operating pressure of 1.0MPa, the push force reaches 2050kgf.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, engaging only at the retracted stroke end to hold the load statically. It does not clamp at mid-stroke. Unlocking is achieved automatically via an air release port or by using the manual release lever.
