Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X250

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X250 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø160mm bore, 250mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X250

The AirTAC SAILB160X250 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock housed in the back cover. This lock engages automatically to hold the rod securely at the retracted stroke end whenever the release air is cut, dropping the load safely without relying on live pressure. In the 160mm bore class, it generates a substantial 14074N of push force and 9425N of pull force at 0.7 MPa.

Because the lock mechanism occupies space in the end cover, the variable air cushion at the locker end is shorter, measuring 28mm compared to the 50mm cushion on the free end. The cylinder uses a robust 40mm carbon steel rod with an M36x2 thread, and operates at speeds between 30-500 mm/s. For position sensing, adding a -S magnet allows the use of AirTAC CMSE reed or DMSE electronic sensors.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X250 Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Safety

Holds heavy elevated loads securely in the retracted position during air pressure loss, preventing sudden drops on vertical lifting platforms.

shield

Power Failure Hold

Maintains the locked retracted position safely when facility power is cut, ensuring heavy clamps and machinery arms remain safely stowed.

precision_manufacturing

Heavy Press Positioning

Secures a large press head at the retracted stroke end after the cycle completes, keeping the heavy assembly open and stable for tooling changes.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X250 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 160mm bore when a heavy vertical load must be held safely at the retracted position during a power loss; if the load must be clamped at an arbitrary mid-stroke point instead, select the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder. The SAILB configuration specifically locks the rod in the retracted end, whereas a SAILF variant holds the extended end. If you need less force, the 125mm bore offers 8590N push at 0.7 MPa, while stepping up to the 200mm bore yields 21991N.

The mechanical lock is a static holding device that engages after the cylinder stops, not a dynamic brake for a moving rod. Avoid using fast-exhaust valves with this cylinder; back-pressure on the locker side can inadvertently release the lock, so an independent-exhaust solenoid valve is required. If human safety depends on the load staying up, add an independent safety measure. Replacement matches must align on the 160mm bore, 250mm stroke, back locker position, 3/4 PT port threads, and mounting type (Basic, FA, FB, CA, CB, CR, LB, TC, FTC, TCM1, TCM2).

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X250 FAQ

At 0.7 MPa operating pressure, the 160mm bore provides 14074N of push force and 9425N of pull force. At the maximum 1.0 MPa pressure, it achieves a push force of 18095N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, located in the back cover to hold the rod only at the retracted stroke end. It engages statically after the cylinder stops; you unlock it by supplying release air or using the manual release lever.
