Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X250S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X250S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø160mm bore, 250mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X250S

The AirTAC SAILB160X250-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder equipped with a spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover. Because the lock engages when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end, it secures heavy loads safely without requiring continuous live air pressure. In the 160mm bore class, this cylinder generates a substantial 14074N of push force and 9425N of pull force at 0.7 MPa, making it suitable for heavy-duty holding tasks.

This model includes a magnetic piston (-S) for position sensing with AirTAC CMSE reed or DMSE electronic solid-state switches. A key design detail is that the variable air cushion at the locker end is shorter (28mm) than at the free end (50mm). Furthermore, the lock is a static holding device that engages after the rod stops; it is not a dynamic brake for a moving load.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X250S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Load Holding

Secures heavy lifted platens in the retracted position during a power loss, preventing sudden drops by engaging the mechanical lock.

shield

Safety Gate Locking

Holds heavy safety gates or machine guards firmly closed at the stroke end without consuming continuous pneumatic energy.

precision_manufacturing

Static Clamp and Hold

Maintains high-force clamping pressure on large fabricated components at the end of the stroke while secondary operations occur.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X250S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 160mm bore when a 125mm cylinder lacks thrust—the 125mm bore provides 8590N push at 0.7 MPa, whereas this 160mm unit yields 14074N. Select the SAILB configuration when the load must be held at the retracted rod-in position; choose SAILF instead if the extended rod-out position requires holding. If your application requires clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than at the stroke end, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice.

For safe operation, never use a fast-exhaust valve with this lock cylinder; use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying retracted, add an independent mechanical safety measure. When replacing this unit, match the 160mm bore, 250mm stroke, back locker position, PT 3/4 port threads, and the -S magnet. The carbon steel rod handles high side-loads, but for a 250mm stroke, ensure external guide rails are used to prevent rod bending.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X250S FAQ

At 0.7 MPa operating pressure, the 160mm bore generates 14074N of push force and 9425N of pull force. The maximum operating pressure is 1.0 MPa.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, engaging only at the retracted stroke end to hold the load statically. It unlocks automatically via air supply to the release port or via a manual release lever. It does not clamp at mid-stroke.
