Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X25S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X25S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø160mm bore, 25mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X25S

The AirTAC SAILB160X25-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder equipped with a mechanical lock in the back cover. Because the lock is spring-applied and air-released, removing the release pressure drives a lock pin into the carbon steel rod, securely holding the load at the retracted stroke end without relying on live air pressure. In this size, the cylinder delivers a robust 10053N of push thrust at 0.5 MPa and 18095N at 0.9 MPa.

Unlike a plain SAI cylinder, this SAIL model provides true static load-holding upon power loss. The locker end features a 28mm variable air cushion, which is intentionally shorter than the 50mm cushion on the free end to accommodate the locking mechanism. The integrated magnet works seamlessly with CMSE reed and DMSE solid-state sensors for position verification.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

0.5 MPa10053 N9425 N

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X25S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Hold

Secures heavy elevated platforms at the retracted stroke end instantly upon air pressure loss, preventing uncontrolled drops.

precision_manufacturing

Clamp and Hold

Maintains high-force clamping on large workpieces without consuming continuous compressed air during the machining cycle.

shield

Safety Gate Lock

Keeps heavy safety gates and machine guards firmly closed at the end of stroke until an intentional air release signal is sent.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X25S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 160mm bore when a task demands high force and a fail-safe hold at the rod-in position; if your application requires slightly less force, stepping down to a 125mm bore yields 5734N of pull at 0.5 MPa. If the load must be held at the extended rod-out position instead, select the SAILF variant, or choose a BSAI clamp-lock cylinder if you need to secure the rod at an arbitrary mid-stroke point.

Remember that this lock engages statically only after the cylinder stops, meaning it will not brake a moving rod. For pneumatic routing, never use a fast-exhaust valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock; an independent-exhaust solenoid valve is required. If human safety depends on the load remaining elevated, always add an independent mechanical safety measure. To replace this unit, match the 160mm bore, 25mm stroke, PT tapered port threads, and the -S magnet option.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X25S FAQ

At 0.5 MPa, this 160mm bore cylinder provides 10053N of push thrust and 9425N of pull thrust. At 0.9 MPa, the push thrust increases to 18095N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, holding the rod statically at the retracted stroke end without live pressure. It unlocks automatically via air supply or manually via a lever, but it only engages after the cylinder stops, not as a mid-stroke brake.
