Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X350

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X350 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø160mm bore, 350mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X350

The AirTAC SAILB160X350 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock housed in the back cover. This mechanism holds the piston rod securely at the retracted stroke end, maintaining the load without requiring continuous live air pressure. Fitted with a carbon steel rod and PT tapered ports, it generates a robust 10053N pull force at 0.5 MPa, making it well suited to heavy-duty holding tasks.

A key design trait is that the variable air cushion at the locker end is shorter (28mm) than the free end cushion (50mm) to accommodate the locking hardware. The lock engages only after the cylinder comes to a complete stop at the stroke terminal; it is a static holding device, not a dynamic brake for a moving rod. To ensure the lock remains engaged, avoid using a fast-exhaust valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock pin.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X350 Is Used

Vertical Lift Holding

Secures heavy lifted platforms in the retracted position instantly upon air pressure loss, preventing sudden drops.

Safety Gate Locking

Keeps substantial safety gates and barriers closed and held tight at the stroke end without consuming continuous air.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X350 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 160mm bore when substantial retracted-end holding force is required; if your application needs less force, the 125mm bore offers 5734N of pull at 0.5 MPa. Select this SAILB configuration to secure loads at the rod-in position, whereas a SAILF variant would hold the rod at the extended position. If your process requires clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than the stroke end, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice. Because human safety may depend on the load staying up, always add an independent safety measure alongside this lock.

When replacing this cylinder, match the 160mm bore, 350mm stroke, back locker position, PT port threads, and the appropriate mounting style from the ISO 15552 compatible set (Basic, FA, FB, CA, CB, CR, LB, TC, FTC, TCM1, TCM2). As this unit has a 350mm stroke, incorporating an external guide mechanism is advised to prevent excessive side-load wear on the seals and rod. Note that this unit lacks a piston magnet, so CMSE reed and DMSE electronic sensors cannot be used without specifying a -S variant.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X350 FAQ

At 0.5 MPa operating pressure, the 160mm bore provides 10053N of pull force and 14074N of push force at 0.7 MPa. The maximum operating pressure is 1.0 MPa.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, located in the back cover to hold the rod at the retracted stroke end. It engages statically after the piston stops and is released automatically via air supply or manually via a lever. It does not clamp at mid-stroke.
