Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X350S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X350S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø160mm bore, 350mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X350S

The AirTAC SAILB160X350-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. Because the lock is spring-applied and air-released, cutting the release air automatically drives the lock pin into the rod, securely holding the load at the retracted stroke end without requiring live pressure. In this 160mm bore configuration, the cylinder generates a substantial 10053N pull force at 0.5MPa and a maximum thrust of 2050kgf at 1.0MPa.

The integrated lock engages only as a static hold after the piston reaches the retracted terminal, meaning it will not arrest a moving rod. To accommodate the locking hardware, the variable air cushion at the locker end is 28mm, which is intentionally shorter than the 50mm cushion found on the free end. The barrel uses an extruded aluminum profile with dual sensor grooves, and the included -S magnet enables precise positioning feedback when paired with AirTAC CMSE reed or DMSE solid-state switches.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X350S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Load Holding

Secures elevated masses in the retracted position during power loss, preventing sudden drops without needing continuous air supply.

shield

Machine Safety Brake

Holds a heavy carriage firmly at the back stroke terminal while operators access the workspace, engaging only after motion fully stops.

factory

Press Clamping

Maintains high-pressure clamping force at the end of stroke using the 18095N push force at 0.7MPa, ensuring the press stays locked.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X350S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 160mm bore when 125mm falls short of the required force (the 125mm bore yields 5734N pull at 0.5MPa). Select the SAILB variant specifically when the load must be secured in the retracted position; choose SAILF instead if the extended end requires holding. If your application demands clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than the stroke end, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct alternative.

For safe operation, avoid using fast-exhaust valves with this cylinder, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock; an independent-exhaust solenoid valve is required. The PT port thread and 3/4-inch fitting must be matched during plumbing. Because the 350mm stroke exceeds 300mm, implementing external guide rails is recommended to prevent excessive side-load wear on the 40mm carbon steel rod and seals. If human safety depends on the load remaining retracted, always add an independent mechanical safety measure.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X350S FAQ

At 0.5MPa, the 160mm bore provides 10053N pull force and 14074N push force. At its maximum operating pressure of 1.0MPa, it delivers a peak thrust of 2050kgf.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released. Removing the release air allows a spring to drive a pin into the rod, holding it statically at the retracted stroke end. Supplying air to the release port unlocks it automatically, or you can use the manual release lever.
