Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X50

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X50 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø160mm bore, 50mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X50

The AirTAC SAILB160X50 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. Because the lock is spring-applied and air-released, removing the release pressure automatically drives a lock pin into the carbon steel rod, securely holding the load at the retracted stroke end without requiring live air pressure. In this 160mm bore class, it generates a substantial 10053N pull force at 0.5MPa, making it ideal for heavy-duty holding tasks.

This model features a PT 3/4 port and a 40mm rod. A notable design trait is that the variable air cushion at the locker end is 28mm, which is intentionally shorter than the 50mm cushion on the free end. The lock is a static holding device that engages after the piston stops; it is not a dynamic brake. For position detection, you would need to specify the -S magnet option to use AirTAC CMSE reed or DMSE solid-state sensors.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

0.5 MPa10053 N9425 N

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X50 Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Load Hold

Secures heavy lifted masses in the retracted position instantly upon air pressure loss, preventing gravity-driven falls.

shield

Safety Gate Locking

Keeps heavy machine access gates firmly closed and retracted during operation, releasing only when air is restored.

factory

Press Hold

Maintains a static clamping force at the end of the stroke without consuming continuous pneumatic energy.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X50 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 160mm bore if your application demands high force alongside fail-safe retracted holding; if you need less force, a 125mm bore provides 5734N pull at 0.5MPa. Select this SAILB configuration when the load must be secured in the rod-in position, and pick SAILF if you need the load held at the extended end. If your process requires locking at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than the stroke terminal, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice instead.

When integrating this cylinder, never use a fast-exhaust valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock; an independent-exhaust solenoid valve is required. Always confirm the exact lock holding force from the datasheet, and if human safety depends on the load remaining retracted, add an independent mechanical safety measure. Replacement parts must match the 160mm bore, 50mm stroke, PT port thread, and your chosen mounting style from the ISO 15552 set (Basic, FA, FB, CA, CB, CR, LB, TC, FTC, TCM1, TCM2).

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X50 FAQ

At 0.5 MPa, the 160mm bore provides 10053N of pull force and 14074N of push force. At the maximum 1.0 MPa operating pressure, it delivers up to 2050 kgf.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, located in the back cover to hold the rod at the retracted stroke end. It engages statically after the cylinder stops and can be unlocked automatically via air or manually via a lever; it does not clamp at mid-stroke.
