Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X500

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X500 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø160mm bore, 500mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X500

The AirTAC SAILB160X500 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. Because the lock is spring-applied and air-released, it automatically engages a lock pin to hold the rod securely at the retracted stroke end whenever release air is cut. This 160mm bore generates a substantial 14074N of push force at 0.7MPa, making it well-suited for heavy-duty positioning.

Unlike a standard SAI cylinder, this unit maintains a static hold without live pressure. To accommodate the locking hardware, the variable air cushion at the locker end is 28mm, which is shorter than the 50mm cushion on the free end. The cylinder operates at speeds of 30-500mm/s and uses a 3/4 PT port with a carbon steel rod. You can unlock the mechanism pneumatically or via the manual release lever.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Press Positioning

Holds the rod firmly at the retracted stroke end on heavy presses, ensuring the tooling stays open without relying on continuous air supply.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X500 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this SAILB configuration when you need to hold a heavy vertical load safely in the retracted position upon power loss. If your application requires holding at the extended stroke end instead, select the SAILF version. For loads that must be clamped at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than a stroke terminal, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice.

This 500mm stroke falls within the 1500mm maximum standard stroke for this bore. For strokes of 300mm or more, incorporating an external guide mechanism is recommended to manage side loads and prevent rod damage. Remember that this is a static holding lock that engages after the piston stops, not a dynamic brake. Avoid using fast-exhaust valves, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock; use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve instead. If human safety depends on the load staying up, add an independent safety measure. Replacement parts must match the 160mm bore, 500mm stroke, back locker position, 3/4 PT port, and standard mounting interface.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X500 FAQ

At a 0.7MPa operating pressure, the 160mm bore provides 14074N of push force and 9425N of pull force. It can achieve a maximum push force of 2050kgf at 1.0MPa.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, engaging only when the rod reaches the retracted stroke end in the back cover. It provides a static hold after the cylinder stops, not a dynamic brake. Unlocking is done automatically via air supply or manually using the release lever.
