Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X500S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X500S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø160mm bore, 500mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X500S

The AirTAC SAILB160X500-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock housed in the back cover. This lock engages when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end, securely holding the rod in place without requiring live air pressure. Built with a carbon steel rod and a magnetic piston for position sensing, it delivers a substantial 14074N of push force at 0.7 MPa, making it suitable for heavy-duty industrial automation.

Because the lock occupies the back cover, the variable air cushion on that locker end is shorter, measuring 28 mm compared to the 50 mm cushion on the free end. The lock releases automatically via air supply or manually via a lever, but you must avoid fast-exhaust valves; back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock, so an independent-exhaust solenoid valve is required.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X500S Is Used

precision_manufacturing

Heavy Machining Hold

Secures heavy machining fixtures in the retracted position during power loss, preventing movement until air pressure is restored to release the lock.

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Safety

Holds elevated platforms or lifting assemblies at the rod-in stroke end, maintaining the load statically without relying on continuous pneumatic pressure.

Gate and Door Control

Keeps heavy industrial gates firmly closed at the retracted terminal, using the mechanical lock to resist external forces until an air signal unlocks it.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X500S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 160 mm bore when an application demands high load-holding capacity at the retracted position, offering 14074N push force at 0.7 MPa. If your system requires less force, stepping down to a 125 mm bore yields 8590N at the same pressure. Select a SAILB configuration to hold the rod-in position, or switch to a SAILF model if the extended position must be secured. If the load must be clamped at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than the stroke end, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice instead.

For accurate replacements, match the 160 mm bore, 500 mm stroke, back locker position, 3/4 PT port, and the -S magnet option. Operating speed is 30-500 mm/s. Because the stroke is 500 mm, ensure external guide rails are used to prevent excessive side-loading on the rod. The lock is a static holding device that engages after the cylinder stops, not a dynamic brake; if human safety depends on the load staying up, add an independent mechanical safety measure.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X500S FAQ

At 0.7 MPa operating pressure, this 160 mm bore cylinder provides a push force of 14074N and a pull force of 9425N. At the maximum 1.0 MPa pressure, it achieves a push force of 18095N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, engaging only when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end in the back cover. It holds the load statically without live pressure; unlocking occurs automatically via air supply to the release port or manually via a lever. It does not clamp at mid-stroke.
