Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X50S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X50S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø160mm bore, 50mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X50S

The AirTAC SAILB160X50-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. It delivers substantial thrust, pushing with 10053N and pulling with 9425N at 0.5 MPa. The lock is spring-applied and air-released, engaging automatically when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end to hold the load securely without requiring live pressure.

This SAILB variant holds the rod in the retracted position, making it ideal for power-loss safety on heavy vertical loads. The locker-end cushion is 28mm, shorter than the 50mm free-end cushion, ensuring compact deceleration. Standard carbon steel rod and an -S magnet for CMSE reed or DMSE solid-state sensors are included. The lock releases automatically via air supply or manually via the lever.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

0.5 MPa10053 N9425 N

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Where the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X50S Is Used

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Safety

Holds heavy elevated loads in the retracted position instantly upon air loss, preventing sudden drops on lifting machinery.

shield

Power-Fail Clamp

Maintains clamping force on large workpieces at the retracted stroke end during power outages without needing live air pressure.

factory

Heavy Press Hold

Secures heavy industrial press tooling in the retracted state safely, ensuring the load stays back even if supply pressure drops.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X50S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 160mm bore when 125mm (6136N push at 0.5 MPa) is insufficient for your load, or step down if 100mm (3927N) suffices. Select SAILB to hold the rod retracted; choose SAILF to hold extended. If your application requires clamping at a mid-stroke position rather than the stroke end, use the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder instead. This is a static holding lock that engages after the cylinder stops, not a dynamic brake. Avoid fast-exhaust valves, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock; use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. For human-safety critical loads, add an independent safety measure. Replacement match: 160mm bore, 50mm stroke, back lock, PT ports, -S magnet.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)
  • ✓ Extra safety measure for people

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X50S FAQ

At 0.5 MPa operating pressure, this 160mm bore cylinder provides a push force of 10053N and a pull force of 9425N. The maximum operating pressure is 1.0 MPa.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, holding the rod statically at the retracted stroke end without live pressure. It is not a mid-stroke clamp or dynamic brake. Unlock it automatically by supplying release air or manually using the release lever.
