Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X80S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X80S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø160mm bore, 80mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X80S

The AirTAC SAILB160X80-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. Because the lock is spring-applied and air-released, cutting the release air drives a lock pin into the carbon steel rod, securely holding the load at the retracted stroke end without consuming live pressure. In this 160mm bore size, the cylinder generates a substantial 10053N pull force at 0.5MPa, making it well-suited for heavy vertical lifting duties.

This model includes a magnetic piston (-S) for precise position monitoring with AirTAC CMSE reed or DMSE solid-state sensors. A distinct engineering detail of this locker variant is the shorter variable air cushion on the lock end (28mm) compared to the free end (50mm), which accommodates the lock hardware while still providing end-of-stroke deceleration. The lock itself is a static holding device that engages only after the piston stops at the terminal position, not a dynamic brake for a moving rod.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X80S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 160mm bore when the 125mm bore (offering 5734N pull at 0.5MPa) is insufficient for your load, or step down to the 125mm if the extra thrust is unnecessary. Select the SAILB configuration when the load must be held safely in the retracted (rod-in) position; choose SAILF instead if the extended (rod-out) position must be maintained. If your application requires clamping at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than the stroke end, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct choice.

For safe operation, never use a fast-exhaust valve with this lock cylinder; always use an independent-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock. The lock is released automatically via air supply or manually via the lever. The PT port thread and comprehensive ISO 15552 mounting options (Basic, FA, FB, CA, CB, CR, LB, TC, FTC, TCM1, TCM2) ensure broad interchangeability. If human safety depends on the load staying up, always add an independent safety measure.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X80S FAQ

The 160mm bore generates a push force of 10053N and a pull force of 9425N at 0.5MPa. At 0.7MPa, the push force is 14074N. The maximum operating pressure is 1.0MPa.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, meaning it engages automatically to hold the rod at the retracted stroke end when release air is cut off. It is a static hold, not a dynamic brake. You can unlock it by supplying air to the release port or by using the manual release lever.
