Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X900

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X900 is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø160mm bore, 900mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X900

The AirTAC SAILB160X900 is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock housed in the back cover. Because the lock sits in the rear, it securely holds the rod at the fully retracted stroke end, making it ideal for vertical power-loss safety. In the 160mm bore class, this actuator generates 9425N of pull force at 0.5MPa and up to 18095N of push force at 0.9MPa.

This non-standard 900mm stroke unit operates at 30-500mm/s and uses a robust 40mm carbon steel rod with an M36x2 thread. The variable air cushion at the locker end is specifically shortened to 28mm to accommodate the locking mechanism, whereas the free end features a longer 50mm cushion. The lock engages automatically as a static hold once the piston stops at the terminal position; it is not a dynamic brake for a moving rod.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X900 the Right Lock Cylinder?

Choose this 160mm bore when substantial thrust is required, but step down to a 125mm bore (providing 5734N pull at 0.5MPa) if your load requirements are lighter. Select the SAILB configuration when the load must be secured in the retracted position, and choose SAILF instead if the extended end requires holding. If your application demands locking at an arbitrary mid-stroke point rather than the stroke end, the BSAI clamp-lock cylinder is the correct solution.

For this non-standard 900mm stroke, adding an external guide rail is highly recommended to prevent excessive side-load wear on the seals. Remember that this lock holds the load statically without live pressure, but back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release it; therefore, do not use a fast-exhaust valve and always install an independent-exhaust solenoid valve. For human-safety critical overhead loads, add an independent mechanical safety measure. Replacement requires matching the 160mm bore, 900mm stroke, PT tapered port, and the desired mounting style.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X900 FAQ

At 0.5MPa, the push force is 10053N and the pull force is 9425N. At 0.9MPa, the push force reaches 18095N.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, engaging statically only when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end. It is released automatically by supplying air to the release port or manually via the lever, but it does not clamp at mid-stroke.
