Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X900S

The AirTAC Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X900S is a genuine double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder with a Ø160mm bore, 900mm stroke and a built-in spring-applied, air-released mechanical lock in the back cover — it holds the load at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end even when air is lost.

About the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X900S

The AirTAC SAILB160X900-S is a double-acting ISO 15552 profile cylinder featuring a built-in mechanical lock in the back cover. Because this is a non-standard 900mm stroke exceeding the 1500mm maximum standard range for this bore, it is engineered for specialized long-travel tasks. A spring-applied, air-released lock engages when the piston reaches the retracted stroke end, securely holding the load without requiring live pressure. In this bore size, the cylinder generates 14074N of push force and 9425N of pull force at 0.7 MPa.

The lock is a static holding device, not a dynamic brake for a moving rod. It engages only after the cylinder comes to a complete stop at the retracted position. For mid-stroke clamping requirements, the BSAI clamp-lock series is the correct choice. The variable air cushion at the locker end is notably shorter at 28mm compared to the 50mm cushion on the free end, ensuring precise deceleration near the lock terminal. This unit includes a standard carbon steel rod and a magnetic piston (-S) for position feedback.

How the Lock Holds

The lock is spring-applied and air-released: a spring drives a lock pin into the rod when the release air is removed, so the load is held at the retracted (rod-in) stroke end without live pressure. Supply air to the release port to unlock automatically, or use the manual release lever.

The lock engages only when the piston reaches the stroke terminal on the back-cover side — it is a static end-of-stroke hold, not a mid-stroke clamp and not a moving-rod brake. For locking at any position along the stroke, choose a BSAI clamp-lock instead.

Valve & safety notes: do not use a fast-exhaust valve with a lock cylinder; use an independent/individual-exhaust solenoid valve, as back-pressure on the locker side can release the lock. If human safety depends on the load staying held, add an independent safety measure.

Cylinder thrust is separate from the lock's holding capability. Actual usable force is lower than theoretical due to friction and back-pressure — size with a margin.

vertical_align_top

Vertical Lift Safety

Holds heavy elevated platforms securely at the retracted stroke end during a power loss, preventing sudden drops.

conveyor_belt

Long-Stroke Material Hold

Locks a 900mm long-travel conveyor diverter in the retracted position safely without consuming continuous air pressure.

Heavy Clamp Station

Maintains high-force clamping at the retracted end on heavy machinery, keeping the workpiece secured during process pauses.

Is the Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X900S the Right Lock Cylinder?

Select this 160mm bore when substantial thrust is necessary, stepping up from the 125mm bore which provides 8590N push at 0.7 MPa, or stepping down from the 200mm bore offering 21991N. Choose the SAILB configuration specifically when the load must be held securely at the fully retracted rod-in position; select SAILF instead if the extended rod-out position requires holding. Because the stroke is 900mm, a side-load guide is strongly recommended to prevent rod binding and premature seal wear over the long travel distance. Replacement requires matching the 160mm bore, 900mm stroke, back locker position, PT tapered ports, and the -S magnet.

The lock holds the rod statically at the stroke end without live air, but it is not a mid-stroke clamp. Avoid using fast-exhaust valves with this cylinder; an independent-exhaust solenoid valve is required because back-pressure on the locker side can unintentionally release the lock. If human safety relies on the load remaining elevated, implement an additional independent safety measure.

Quick checklist

  • ✓ Hold needed at the retracted (rod-in) end?
  • ✓ Or lock anywhere → use BSAI
  • ✓ Independent-exhaust valve fitted
  • ✓ Port/thread type (PT/G)

Airtac SAILB Rear Lock Cylinder SAILB160X900S FAQ

At an operating pressure of 0.7 MPa, this 160mm bore cylinder generates a push force of 14074N and a pull force of 9425N. The maximum operating pressure is 1.0 MPa.

The lock is spring-applied and air-released, engaging statically only when the piston reaches the fully retracted stroke end in the back cover. It is unlocked automatically by supplying release air or manually via the lever. It does not clamp at mid-stroke; for that, use the BSAI series.
